Almost as big as President Bush winning

To me it is almost unbelievable. For the Senate minority leader's quarter-century run in Washington to come to an end is almost hard to comprehend.

John Thune emerged from a tumultuous and divisive race against Sen. Tom Daschle with a narrow but solid 51-49 percent advantage early today, ending the Senate minority leader's quarter-century run in Washington and giving Republicans their biggest Election Day victory outside of the presidential contest.

I think the truly significant result of this is that the demoncrats will have to be cautious about blocking the President's nominees. Daschle's use of his leadership position to block nominees with filibuster tactics is the main reason the the Republicans went after him so strongly.

Now, the President's ability to confirm nominees will be much enhanced by the threat of voter dissatisfaction with such tactics and the loss of their perceived entitlement to priviledge and power.

With the age of several Supreme Court justices, the President may have the ability to shape the court for another generation and keep the conservative majority. This may be the most significant outcome of the entire 2004 election.
