Baseball vs Arkansas Game 2

Pitching change for Arkansas. Hopefully Auburn can find a way to get that runner at 1st home and end this thing.

Lost a few pretty much like that....about time we get a gift for a win....I'm happy with it....but sure would like to see some better hitting with men on base.

As for the pitch count issue raised above.......there are a lot of skeptics out there who question the magic number of a 100 pitch level which was pretty much an arbitrary number with very little data to support the idea that it was harmful to the pitchers.

Seems that the 100 pitch thing is considered by some pretty smart folks as a self fulfilling prophecy....as they grow and develop, most young players don't pitch many innings thus their arms are not conditioned to pitch very many innings.... In Thompson's case, he is usually 6 or 7 days between starts rather than the normal 4 or 5 days in the minors and majors. At the rate he is being used (and not used for mid-week relief) and if he is trained to pitch 100-120 innings in some outings, there are those who say that the 100 count actually hinders his development and potential....and that arbitrary limit is not necessarily protecting the pitcher. Holliday has been around probably knows what is what on that subject.

I agree 100 is an arbitrary number and the SP arm isn't gonna fall off magically as he throws 101. It's just all 100 pitch outings aren't created equal; some are high leverage/stress innings and some are cruise control innings. In the past this season, it's been evident KT has been laboring on pitch X (usually upper 80s-mid 90s count) but he is kept out there for 30-40 more pitches. This is the "danger zone" specialists like Dr. Andrews et al talk about where fatigue can cause minor breakdowns in mechanics and put more fatigue on the "leverage points" (rotator cuff, UCL, obliques) of the motion. Let's be honest, if AU had more than a JuCo bullpen at times, KTs workload would be less. And This year, his marathon outings have given up a game late just as much as they've squeaked out the win. He's a gamer and Im sure every mound visit out there, he wants to keep the rock, but he's got 7 figure talent and id hate that to go to waste because he was ridden too much his sophomore year. You are correct though, it is a very subjective discussion based on who you ask

One article I should have attached put more emphasis on pitches per inning...making the point that 25 or 30 pitches in one inning had the potential for damage much more than 120 pitches spread out more or less evenly over 9 innings...especially since in today's baseball, the pitcher usually has 15 minutes rest between innings.

But as you note, hope they are watching for any signs of problems....and yes, a couple good bull pen pitchers would make a difference in how many innings he pitched per game...but many people who study the subject would suggest that cutting his "work" could actually increase the risk of future injury. Agree...hope our coaches use good judgment with him.

I'd put my money on Dr.Andrews and his knowledge. He and his staff have studied and researched sports injuries extensively.

Most of his study has been on younger players....pre HS and HS....According to what I've read from his group, he is mostly worried about what happens to younger players before they have developed physically.....and the trend toward one sport specialization for young players.

A good link here..... http://www.andrewssportsmedicine.com/getpage.php?name=OneSport

No indication from this article that KT is being over-worked considering that he is getting good rest between starts....and which might explain why he is not playing first base on his off days ....though we could use his hitting. And as we know, Dr Andrews has close ties with AU.

A manager has to know his players. Some pitchers can't go much over 100 pitches without problems. Some can go to 125 or more routinely with no trouble at all. It appears KT can go as long as needed. The coaching staff is competent so I'm not concerned.
