Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) said in an interview on Wednesday that there is a chance the sexual misconduct allegations against Rep. John ConyersJr. (D-Mich.) "could be made up."

“You can’t jump to conclusions with these types of things,” Clyburn, who is the third ranking Democrat in the House, told The New York Times.

“For all I know, all of this could be made up," he said.

Clyburn also told the Times that he was unsure whether the allegations “have any real substance.”

The comments come a day after Conyers acknowledged he took part in a settlement with a former female employee who accused him of sexual misconduct in order to avoid litigation in 2015.

The House Ethics Committee announced on Tuesday that it was probing the sexual harassment allegations against Conyers, following a call from House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to launch an investigation.

Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) called on Wednesday for Conyers to step down from his post on the Judiciary Committee as the Ethics Committee probes the allegations.

"I really think that probably the appropriate thing right now is he should step down as the ranking member of the Judiciary Committee. And be subject to this ethics investigation," Meeks, who serves on the Congressional Black Caucus with Conyers, told CNN.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Sunday that Rep. John Conyers (D-Michigan) is “entitled to due process” in the wake of recently revealed sexual harassment allegations.

“We are strengthened by due process,” Pelosi said on Meet the Press. “Just because someone is accused – and was it one accusation? Is it two?”

Conyers, who has served in Congress since the 1960s, has been embattled since a BuzzFeed report this week. It revealed that in 2015, he reached a taxpayer-funded settlement in a female staffer’s sexual harassment claim. The alleged victim said he fired her because she turned down his sexual advances.

He denied wrongdoing when news of the settlement popped up.

“My office resolved the allegations — with an express denial of liability — in order to save all involved from the rigors of protracted litigation,” he said in a statement. “That should not be lost in the narrative.”

Other recently revealed court documents showed that another staffer tried to sue him in February for “repeatedly and daily” nonconsensual touching. She dropped the complaint after the court refused to leave it sealed. He told the Associated Press he knew nothing about claims of groping.

We have hypocrites on both sides of the aisle. When somebody on the other side is accused that person should resign immediately but when somebody on their side is accused they should go through due process.  Ideally any settlements with Taxpayer money should be open to the Public and people on both sides of the aisle do deserve due process. Accusers should have an easy way to get an issue of this type to be reviewed without having to jump through hoops. Also if found guilty any payment should come out of the office holders pockets not from taxpayer dollars.

Due process does not assume guilt or innocence until evidence has been reviewed.
