The Monterrey Parrilleros have announced the signing of their quarterback for the 2022 Mexican American Professional Football League season – former Auburn signal-caller Jeremy Johnson.

Johnson becomes the first foreign player on Monterrey’s roster as the team builds toward its April 29 opener against Caudillos de Chihuahua.

“He is a player with great football IQ and knowledge of defensive coverage,” Monterrey coach Edmundo Reyes said in a team release. “The power and accuracy of his arm, combined with his experience playing in the SEC, the highest level of Division I in college football in the United States, results in a high-impact quarterback in our attack.”

Liga FAM-YOX is a nine-team league returning from a two-year hiatus because of the coronavirus pandemic.

At Auburn from 2013 through 2016, Johnson completed 179-of-282 passes for 2,223 yards with 20 touchdowns and 11 interceptions and ran for 210 yards and nine touchdowns on 73 carries.

Johnson most recently played with the West Virginia Roughriders of the American Arena League in 2019.

After two years as a middle-school head coach, Johnson worked on the coaching staff of his alma mater, Carver High School in Montgomery, in 2021.

Johnson earned Alabama’s Mr. Football award for 2012. In his senior season with the Wolverines, Johnson passed for 3,193 yards and 31 touchdowns and ran for 705 yards and seven touchdowns as Carver posted a 12-2 record.
