Inside Auburn’s spring practice: Starting OL appearing to take shape, transfers making early impacts

Auburn QBs compete on first day of Spring practice; Payton Thorne, Walker White, Hank Brown

Refreshed after a week away for spring break, Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze graciously extended the viewing period of Tuesday afternoon’s spring practice, giving media members a better look at how some position groups are shaping up with the second A-Day spring game of the Freeze era quickly approaching.

From a starting offensive line beginning to take shape and some of the new faces on Auburn’s roster making early impacts, here are a few, quick-hitting takeaways from Tuesday’s 45-minute viewing window.

Quarterback and running back combinations

In the early minutes of the viewing period, Auburn’s group of quarterbacks and running backs were paired up to run through drills without a defense.

Here’s what those pairings looked like, in order of rotation:

Senior QB Payton Thorne & senior RB Jarquez Hunter

Sophomore QB Holden Geriner & junior RB Damari Alston

Redshirt freshman QB Hank Brown & senior RB Brian Battie

Freshman QB Walker White & sophomore RB Jeremiah Cobb

Starting offensive line starting to take shape

During Tuesday’s extended viewing window, there was an opportunity to get a better look at who the staples will be along Auburn’s offensive line.

Starting right in the middle at the center spot, sophomore Connor Lew appeared to take most, if not all, first-team reps. This doesn’t come as a shock considering the role Lew found himself having down the stretch of last season. After an injury to Avery Jones, Lew went on to start in six games and appears to be ready to pick up where he left off.

Flanking Lew at the starting guard spots during Tuesday’s practice appeared to be Dillon Wade on the left and Jeremiah Wright to the right.

Starting at the tackle spots through much of the viewing window was Mississippi State transfer Percy Lewis to the left and Izavion Miller to the right.

Here’s an easier-to-digest look:

Left tackle: Percy Lewis

Left guard: Dillon Wade

Center: Connor Lew

Right guard: Jeremiah Wright

Right tackle: Izavion Miller

Veteran CB absent, other notes from the defensive secondary

Auburn senior defensive back Keionte Scott was not seen at Tuesday afternoon’s practice. The reasoning for his absence is unknown.

Meanwhile, rising sophomore Kayin Lee, sophomore Alabama transfer Antonio Kite and redshirt freshman Colton Hood all took a handful of first-team reps at the corner spot with Lee being the most consistent “starter” — which is to be expected considering how much play time he saw as a freshman in 2023.

At safety, it appears senior Texas transfer Jerrin Thompson and junior Caleb Wooden are your two first-teamers, with redshirt freshman Sylvester Smith also getting looks at the spot.

Thompson is a guy Freeze has been pretty excited about, saying he “knows all three spots back there” and has already asserted himself as a leader in the locker room.

During a bit of 7-on-7 work on Tuesday, Thompson came away with an interception after freshman Kaleb Harris made a nice play to break up a pass across the middle.

“The juice is loose”

Auburn linebacker Eugene Asante returns as one heckuva leader for the Tigers.

During some of Tuesday’s 7-on-7 work, Asante got onto his defense a bit, yelling that “the juice is loose.”

Asante returned as one of Auburn’s starting linebackers during Tuesday’s practice, splitting time with Duke transfer Dorian Mausi Jr. Meanwhile, senior Austin Keys looked the part of the Tigers’ second first-team linebacker.

Starting at the Buck linebacker spot Tuesday appeared to be senior Jalen McLeod, while sophomore Keldric Faulk started at defensive end.

Appearing to start along the defensive line’s interior was a pair of transfers in Texas transfer Trill Carter and Kansas transfer Gage Keys — Carter at nose tackle and Keys at defensive tackle.
