Bailey's rehab could allow him to play this fall

Macon --- Sean Bailey is working toward being back in Georgia's lineup by the start of the season.

The wide receiver tore his anterior cruciate ligament during Nokia Sugar Bowl practices in December. At the time, both Bailey and position coach John Eason thought the senior-to-be would redshirt in 2006.

"We want him to train and rehab and think in terms of getting ready to play," Bulldogs coach Mark Richt said Wednesday. "And by the time we are into camp or the end of camp, we will know."

After nearly seven months of rehabilitation, there remains a possibility that Georgia's best deep threat could come back to bolster an inexperienced receiving corps.

"I saw Sean running a little bit last week and he looks as fast as ever," Bulldogs quarterback Joe Tereshinski said. "Not making too many cuts yet but really working hard and showing that he wants to play."

But Georgia is not going to push Bailey, who averaged 22.6 yards a catch last season. Richt said Bailey would redshirt "if he is not full speed, confident and ready to rip and snort and have a great senior year."

Said Richt: "We want him to have a great senior year, whether it is this year or next year."

Richt concerned by lack of O-line depth

Richt isn't too concerned about his starting five offensive linemen for the Sept. 2 opener against Western Kentucky: Ken Shackleford, Fernando Velasco, Nick Jones, Chester Adams and Michael Turner.

But the coach is concerned about the depth after that, especially considering senior Daniel Inman has been suspended for the first two games.

"We don't have a junior or a sophomore tackle in the program," Richt said.

Transfers, injuries and recruiting missteps have led to the lack of depth.

And now Georgia finds itself facing a season in which there is no bye to rest weary bodies for 11 consecutive games.

"This year, if we got some serious injuries, we could run ourselves into trouble," Richt said.

Pushing freshmen Kevin Perez and John Miller into early action might not be the best answer, Richt said. But if injuries occur, Georgia will have to figure out a way to plug holes. It also must find a way to get more offensive line recruits.

"There is no question that is the most critical position," Richt said. "What we have got to do is recruit offensive linemen and, in particular, tackles."

Georgia has two offensive linemen committed: Trinton Sturdivant of Wadesboro, N.C., and Tanner Strickland of Nashville, Ga.

Ex-Dog LB Kearney now at Ga. Southern

Tavares Kearney, the one-time Georgia linebacker from Tucker, has resurfaced at Georgia Southern. Kearney and the Bulldogs parted ways after a tumultuous summer of 2005, when the standout recruit was involved in an altercation with a teaching assistant on campus.

IMO he should take this year off and come back next season. We've seen that these guys can return quickly from ACL repair, but there haven't been many that could return to form for at least 12-18 months.
