GREENSBORO, Ga. (AP) -- University of Georgia basketball guard Kevin Brophy died in a two-car crash on Georgia Highway 15 near Greensboro, authorities said.

Brophy was driving home alone to Savannah from Athens when his car collided with another vehicle around 4 p.m. Thursday, police said. He died at the scene.

It is unclear whether severe weather was a factor in the accident, said Greene County Sheriff Chris Houston.

The woman driving the other car, whose name was not released, had two broken arms and was flown to Atlanta's Grady Memorial Hospital, said Sgt. G.T. Jackson, a Georgia State Patrol officer.

Brophy, a rising junior guard, moved to Savannah in 2003 from Melbourne, Australia, where his family still lives. He lived with a surrogate family and played basketball for a local high school in hopes of earning a college scholarship.

At UGA, he was a walk-on player his freshman year but played 28 games his first season, earning him a scholarship. He played less his sophomore season, averaging 10 minutes in 18 games and scoring about a point a game.

He also played for the Australian national team in the 2005 World University Games in Turkey.

"This is just very tragic. Kevin was a beloved teammate and a pillar of our program. We will miss his undeniable optimism, leadership and sincere friendship," said Georgia basketball coach Dennis Felton.

Before returning to Savannah, Brophy had worked at a free basketball camp for the Athens Boys and Girls Club, according to men's basketball spokesman Tim Hix.

"This is a shocking tragedy and we all have the deepest sympathy for Kevin's family," said Georgia athletic director Damon Evans.

Prayers sent.

Prayers for this young man and his family.

Hope the NCAA does not ban someone from paying for his body to be sent back to Melbourne, Australia.
