Carving up the White House's little lies

My head is spinning from all the spinning. Deliberate or not, there has been quite a bit of backtracking and back-and-forthing over a couple of big stories out of Iraq lately.

Let's talk turkey for starters.

U.S. President George W. Bush's celebrated Thanksgiving Day 2 1/2-hour blitz of an army mess hall has rightly been praised as a masterful stroke of photo opportunism.

No need to review this one. We've seen it on TV more often than any episode of The Simpsons. But here's the thing: At least two of the more mythic details of this foray appear to have been, um, overplayed.

First there's the poor unfortunate bird itself. That picture-perfect platter of turkey-with-all-the-trimmings Bush toted around for the cameras was just a prop, set dressing that was not for G.I. Joe consumption.

"A contractor had roasted and primped the turkey to adorn the buffet line, while the 600 soldiers were served from cafeteria-style steam trays ... , " Mike Allen of The Washington Post reported last week. "They said the bird was not placed there in anticipation of Bush's stealthy visit, and military sources said a trophy turkey is a standard feature of holiday chow lines."

That contractor? Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR), a division of Halliburton, the Houston oil conglomerate once headed by Vice President Dick Cheney — who still gets payouts.

KBR is the company scoring big contracts in Iraq in a bidding process that's — and this is a generous way of phrasing matters — less than transparent.

Now, I'm not saying that Bush's turkey trot was stage-managed in advanced — or that Bush scored a fowl shot. Perhaps, as his handlers insist, it was just a coincidence that he grabbed and paraded it for the cameras. Maybe he didn't know it would be there and hadn't been advised to go for it ahead of time. Or it could be that the guy is just an ace performer and knows what will best play to the house.

Whatever.....

Carving up the White House's little lies

WHAT!?!?!?! The Bush visit to Iraq was just a photo-op? Now I'm really shocked at that!! BTW, the Turkey wasn't even real. There was only one press entourage allowed to go along, Fox (fair and balanced) News Service, even though there were dozens of photographers invited. Reporters were asked to keep their window shutters down and phone batteries removed for the flight. That doesn't even get into the White House spin about the British airlines that supposedly made contact with Airforce One, but that's another lie.

Your hatred has really just become laughable!:lol::lol:

If you think that the Bush trip to Iraq was JUST a photo op, you are missing the point. Did you see the reaction from the troops? The trip, regardless of the intent, was a huge morale boost for the troops. How cynical can you be?

Saying that the trip was JUST a photo op is like saying buying your children gifts for Christmas is an attempt at buying their love. No its not. But, a cynical person can SURE spin it that way.

The troops could care less about a photo op. They were thrilled and still are pleased that The President of The United States flew all that way to see them.

What has Donut mad is he knows deep in his heart that if Bill Clinton were still president he would not broken away from Monica to make the trip.

If Algore had stolen the election, he would not have made the trip either, but would be trying to invent a better internet. :D

Ted Kennedy would ask someone to pass the bottle. :drink1::drink1::drink1:

Even if the turkey was fake is it that big of a deal. I think the important thing is that he took the risk of flying over there to see them and it brightened their day.
