A new twist in the DC gun ban case

Just about everyone assumed that this case would be appealed to the Supreme Court but it now appears that may not happen. Apparently, DC's mayor is now considering the pursuit of an altered gun ban while dropping the appeal. Since the DC Circuit ruling did not strike down any part of the law which banned guns outside the home the theory is to roll back the in-home restrictions and pass a new law which bans only public possession.

By ducking an appeal to the Supreme Court it would avoid the possibility that the Court could use the case to strike down bans on possession in public places. It would also mean that current bans outside of DC would not be affected since SCOTUS would not have the opportunity to use the case to apply a nationwide standard. Everyone assumed this case might shake up the entire nation's gun laws but there's at least a possibility that the whole thing may just disappear rather quietly.

It's a good step. At least the people will be able to defend themselves legally in their place of residence. Can't kill the octopus all at once, just one tentacle at a time.
