Wireless Routers

OK you techno weenies. Gimme the lowdown on these. I am on cable for the e-bays.

Is there really any difference speed wise between the $50 and $200 one? Doesn't look like it to me. Max distance that I will be working from it is probably around 40 - 50 feet.

You're not going to see any speed difference based on simple cost factors. If a router is 802.11g, it is theoretically capable of 54Mbps and so will any other router that has that spec, regardless of cost. What you'll usually get by spending more is more ports on the router and perhaps a little more range or a stronger signal within a range and a few other capabilities. And there's always the paying for a brand name that might get you a little more reliability and quality.

Also remember, even the newest wireless routers that can do 802.11n, which is up to 4x faster than the b protocol will not really speed up access to the internet for the laptop using wireless. It will increase speed when transferring files from one computer on the network to the other and it has a much wider range.

You can get the linksys WRT54G for about $50 all day. I had a cheaper one, but it burned up. Keep an eye out for mail in rebates. A little hassle, but money is money.

That is what I have. I caught them on sale for about that price right after Christmas and now the run around that same price all the time. It was worked perfectly for me. Like TT said, the reasonable priced routers are going to do just fine for home use.

Speaking of sales, I bought a 250 GB Western Digital external hard drive for $99 right after Christmas, now you can get 500 GB for almost the same price. :banghead: My external requires it to be plugged into a power source, but now you can get these 160-200 GB "pocket" external hard drives that run of the power of your computer when you connect it to your USB drive. Daddy knows what he is getting for Christmas (after I get Blonde Wadabi a new computer).

I also saw a a 1 TB external the other day.

How much porn are you downloading? :poke:

Shhhh....

Home movies (the G-rated kind), backups of DVD movies, ipod formatted videos, music, pictures, e-books, comics, and programs can eat up some serious hard drive space. I just recently almost ate up the 250 GB external and had to start burning things to regular and rewritable CDs and DVDs to make some room on it.

Heck, as many pictures as Blonde Wasabi takes, especially of her nephew, she could eventually take up an 80 GB external hard drive on her own. That is one reason she needs a new computer with a DVD-ROM and more hard drive space so she will quit bugging me to back up all her pics on a DVD-RW and my external.

I have a Netgear and I am not real impressed with it. I have had some troubles and the other two people I know that had a Netgear wound up trashing the thing after about a year or so.

When mine is working, it is just fine.

Now that you mention it, I did have a Netgear wired router that gave me problems, which why I went to the LinkSys wireless.

Do yall know anything about routers that act as a modem as well? My new roommate says his old roommates had a cable modem and router in one. I know that they had a linksys. I have a old linksys that is only wireless B and doesnt work that great consistently (have to reset it a lot), so I was thinking about getting a new one. And its a factor in the cost of cable internet.
