1. The "greater jihad" is "striving" of any kind, particularly moral; the struggle to be a better person, a better Muslim, the struggle against drugs, against immorality, against infidelity, etc.

2. Holy war in agreement with the Shari'ah: only undertaken when the faith is threatened and at the approval of a religious authority such as a mullah, though this is a difficult distinction

Their faith is always threatened due to the core meaning of Islam. Islam cannot abide with other faiths. How do Muslim "religious authorities" gain their authority? Who grants it? Why is it granted? If you answer those two questions you will understand the true essence of Islam.
