Epic match at Wimbledon

Total match time is well over 10 hours now, smashing the previous record of 6 hrs and 33 minutes. The fifth set is now tied at 59-59. That's right. They've played 118 games so far in this set alone. In fact, just the elapsed time for this 5th set would have broken the record for an entire match.

Here's your score so far for Isner v. Mahut: 6-4, 3-6, 7-6, 6-7, 59-59

Unreal.

Update: match suspended due to darkness. They'll have to finish tomorrow.

To win a match you have to win 3 "sets". Sets consist of games. First one to win 6 games (must win by 2) wins the set. So you can win 6-0, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3, or 6-4. If each player "holds serve" then you'll end up at 6-6 in which case you'd normally play a tiebreaker which is basically 1 game where you both serve and a winner is decided.

In Wimbledon there is no tiebreaker in the 5th set. You have to win outright by 2 games.

In the 5th set of this match neither player has yet to lose serve (lose the game when you're serving) so they have just gone on and on and on (and on, and on, and on....)

Hated to see a loser in this one. And even more sad is that Isner lost this morning in straight sets. He was just too gassed after that match. He was broken in his very first service game.

This is an outstanding explanation. Are you a teacher?
