Yet to resume contact drills
November 5, 2018
Head coach Bruce Pearl effectively ruled Wiley (foot) out for the season opener versus South Alabama on Tuesday but added that the big man could get cleared for contact later this week, Justin Ferguson of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Wiley appears to be practicing in some capacity, though the fact that he hasn't been cleared for contact makes it unlikely he'll be back in action for another couple weeks. At this point, Wiley is likely targeting a return against Xavier at the Maui Invitational beginning Nov. 19.

What I heard him say was that he could be cleared for next week -- I wasn't particularly sober at post-game so I may have misheard. But if this is the case HELL YEAH

No he didn’t. He said hopefully back next week. So probably miss the U Dub game but hopefully play in that warm up contest before heading to Maui

The local radio show said that he heard Pearl say that Wiley would be back next week, so I assumed I heard it right.  Guess we were both wrong

I wouldn't do that...except sometimes to stir the pot but even then it's always from truth I have been told or seen.

Source: Austin Wiley expected to play against Washington

By Brandon Marcello

AUBURN, Alabama — Auburn center Austin Wiley is expected to play in a nationally-ranked showdown with Washington on Friday, a source familiar with the situation told Auburn Undercover on Wednesday.

Auburn coach Bruce Pearl confirmed Thursday the former 5-star prospect participated in a "contact" practice Wednesday, adding that there is a "chance" he will be available for the 8:30 p.m. tipoff between No. 11 Auburn (1-0) and No. 25 Washington (1-0) inside Auburn Arena.

Wiley (foot sprain) looked "pretty good" in practice Wednesday, Pearl said.

“We’ll just see how he does the next couple of days with a little bit more pounding and see if all of his symptoms are gone," Pearl said.

Should WIley return, it will be his first competitive action since he did so with the USA U19 World Cup team in the summer of 2017. He sat out the 2017-18 season due to an FBI investigation involving former assistant Chuck Person, but the center is eligible this season. Wiley injured his lower left leg in a practice in early October and had not participated in a full practice for one month.

“If he’s available, he’ll play," Pearl said. "He clearly would come off the bench. He won’t be on a heavy minute restriction or otherwise he wouldn’t be out there.”

No. 11 Auburn (1-0) played with only eight scholarship players Tuesday in its 101-58 clobbering of South Alabama in the Tigers' first season opener as a ranked team since 1999.

The 6-foot-11, 260-pound Wiley would be a huge addition to the frontcourt for the Tigers, who host a big Washington front line on Friday. Washington utilizes a zone defense, and Wiley could prove to be a zone buster in the paint.

“I think his return would be big, but not for this game," Pearl said. "He could be a factor in there offensively against their zone. Absolutely. How much would you expect from him? If I had him for a couple of weeks (practicing) and we had him out there, he could be a big factor in the middle of that zone on the offensive end. But with such short time with him getting ready, I won’t play him if he’s not ready to play. So I don’t think it will be a restricted minutes thing. If he’s ready, he’s ready. If he’s not, he’s not.”

Wiley was the program's second 5-star signee in school history, but hasn't played since the 2016-17 season after an FBI investigation forced him to sit out his second season on campus. He averaged 8.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per game as a freshman in 2016-17. He reclassified after being expected to be a 2017-18 signee and arrived at Auburn in late December 2016 as the nation’s No. 24 player, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

"It would just be great to have Austin back," Auburn guard Jared Harper said Tuesday. "Just how he sat out last year. He's been fighting to get back. He battled a couple of injuries. I know he's going to be ready when his name is called."

Wiley played on the international level when he was named the team captain of the 2017 USA U19 World Cup team. Wiley was the only American and one of just seven players to average a double-double in the FIBA World Cup in Cairo, Egypt with 10.3 points and 10.9 rebounds per game as the United States took home the bronze medal in the summer of 2017.

Wiley tested the NBA waters and participated in the NBA Draft Combine in the spring, but decided to return to Auburn. Pearl believed Wiley would have been picked in the second round of the NBA Draft had he left Auburn in the spring.

I see the article still refers to him as 6 11. I guess the nba measuring equipment was determined to be inaccurate.

Probably just looked at AU's site for reference on the article. Doubt AU changes measurables based on another source including the NBA.

Combine measurements in both football and basketball are the most accurate measurements you will find IMO

We just list him taller because it looks better. AU math as usual. Remember when Lee Ziemba lost two inches when he went to the NFL?  :)

I'm hoping Bruce uses this warm up game on wedensday as a scrimmage that's almost solely dedicated to getting Wiley involved and comfortable with the team.

Still interested in peoples' thoughts if they think he'll just absolutely displace Mac from the starting line up.
