Cam and the Panthers

Letting Steve Smith get away has to rank up there with one of the dumbest personnel moves I have ever seen. Who the heck is Cam going to get the ball to now? They don't have any playmakers left at the WR position. Do they just expect him to run the ball every play next year? As Forrest Gump's mama said, stupid is as stupid does!

He is a declining receiver who will turn 35 in May, with a big cap hit.

Do some of you not understand how the NFL works? One of the dumbest moves you've ever seen is releasing a 35 year old receiver? Talk about over exaggeration.

Their WR situation looks bad right now, but luckily for them this draft class is stacked with receivers. It wont be optimal for them to break camp relying on rookies, but they have a lot of room to add young talent at the position. It wasn't optimal for them to rely on a 35 year old 5'9 receiver either.

I heard it said once and it rings true. Relying on young unproven players will get you fired. That isn't the exact wording but it is the point. There were some good receivers available in free agency. You have to be a player in the free agent market. That doesn't mean you do what Washington has done and grab every one you can but you do need to address some of your needs that way.

Smirh is getting old but is still a stud receiver and a team leader. They look like a different offense when he is on the field (and healthy). Maybe they find a great rookie and maybe they don't, but the time for the Panthers to make a move toward the Super Bowl is now. If the don't do it in the next year or two the window may well close as they lose some top players off the defense. IMHO now was not the time for them to be lose their best offensive threat (not named Cam).

Their best offensive threat is Greg Olsen, not Steve Smith. The problem with the Panthers is that their previous front office left a salary-cap mess which doesn't give them a whole lot of wiggle room. Both of their declining and injury prone runningbacks are vastly overpaid, especially Stewart. They just signed Jerricho Cotchery so that gives them one decent veteran receiver to replace the guys they lost, and Tiquan Underwood who gives them a speed threat guy to replace Ginn. They will draft a receiver with one of their first two picks in all likelihood, and this draft is so deep at the position that you'll see very skilled guys still available up to rounds ~4-5.

The Panthers and Raiders have both expressed interest in trading for Desean Jackson. He would be a great addition to that Panther's depleted receiving corp.
