AUDub 11,182
Found a gem. The Trussville Raceway is now my go to for beer. About to pour a Trappistes Rochefort 10 I picked up.

I would have never expected such a selection at the Raceway. They have beer on tap, too. EDIT: This is one of the best beers I've had.

AUDub 11,182
Is Mac's Lounge still standing? No. A lot has changed . My family moved here in 1993 and it was nothing to what it is now. I moved to Oneonta in about 2008, got married, and moved back back in April, and it still grew changed tremendously in my time away. The pinnacle was a driving range when I was growing up. EDIT: Velma's lasted a long time, though. They shut down relatively recently. Not bad for a little hole in the wall. Good burgers.
ShocksMyBrain 9,368
This hits you like a ton of bricks. Quadrupel. Yeah that one packs quite a punch. I wanted to go take a nap after I had one. If you like that, try St. Bernardus abt 12. Also a quad and very delicious.

Bought an Orval last night that I'll be cracking open this evening.

McLoofus 35,182
Can't believe I just discovered this thread. Cheers, all. Agree w/ everything I've read in the last few pages about the Belgians. The Orval will treat you much differently than the quads do, as Shocks mentioned. AUDub 11,182
Initial ranking on my insofar limited experience with beer. 1. Quadrupel: Trappistes Rochefort 10 2. Dubbel: Chimay Red 3. Russian Imperial Stout: Ten Fidy 4. Belgian Pale Ale: Orval 5. Belgian Stong Dark Ale: Chimay Blue 6. Tripel: Chimay White 7. DIPA: Little Sumpin Extra 8. Russian Imperial Stout: Old Rasputin 9. Belgian Stong Pale Ale: Duvel 10. IPA: Good People IPA 11. Witbier: Hoegaarden 12. Brown Ale: Fat Tire 13. Belgian Stong Dark Ale: Brother Thelonius Fridge stays stocked with Fat Tire. It's more for friends and neighbor than myself, but a good go to beer. Chimay is my gameday beer. I'll always have one poured before kickoff. If I must do domestic, Michelob Ultra. Served ice cold, it is like drinking water. About as inoffensive as I can imagine Worst I've had is Busch. Downright offensive. Will never order one again. More to come. That I'm just getting started is not lost on me and a little daunting.

Further to that, there's bad news and there's good news, of which I'm sure you're well aware. The bad news is that you'll never even come close to trying them all. The good news is that you'll never run out of new beers to try! Tried a few things last night, but the only interesting one to me was the Starr Hill Taste of Honey. It's a dubbel, but instead of the typical Belgian candi sugar, they use a honey produced near their brewery. I thought it was fantastic. The honey really made sense to me alongside the fig flavors from the yeast.
ShocksMyBrain 9,368
Fat Tire is an amber For a good, readily available brown, look for Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar.

You're right, it was late and I was sleepy. I have been considering getting Good People Brown. I see it in Publix every time I go in. Can is an eye catcher next to their IPA. McLoofus 35,182
I had two beers during the game last night, Belching Beaver's Beavers Milk from CA (terrible name, awesomely rich milk stout at only 5.3%) and the Paradox Skully No. 13 from CO (wild wheat wine aged in oak barrels, probably should've let it age awhile but running out of room in the cellar). If you're ever in the San Diego area, I'd recommend checking out that stout. Seriously some of the tastiest beer I've had under 6%, you could get away with having a few. The Paradox didn't stand out from any number of other sours you could get in CO. Has anybody had the Back 40 Fence Post? I'm hearing good things. ShocksMyBrain 9,368
Belching Beaver was at a beer fest up here this Summer. I didn't get a chance to try any of their stuff, but I hear that they have a pretty legit peanut butter porter. I see those Paradox bottles all the time, yet I pass over them. Given the price tag, I *would not* recommend that you grab one just for S&Gs. Sounds like you're in CO, so you're never going to run out of other things to try instead.
