General Motors will pay bonuses of at least $4,000 each to its factory workers -- by far the largest bonuses the automaker has ever paid its blue-collar employees.

Before this, the biggest bonus GM (GM) ever paid its union employees was $1,775 in 1999. Exact details of the bonus amounts paid will be revealed after GM outlines its annual profit later this month.

GM (GM) said that for 96% of its U.S. salaried workforce, bonuses will fall within the range of 4% to 16% of the employees' base pay.

Fewer than 1% of the automaker's salaried employees will receive bonuses of at least 50% of their salaries, the automaker said.

How much money are we talking about?

General Motors is likely to spend more than $500 million on employee bonuses and

profit-sharing based on the company's performance last year.

I have no problem with Ford rewarding their employees b/c Ford didn't take federal money. This is absurd that GM is doing this especially when union employees are already some, if not the highest paid in automotive industry at what $50-60/hour?!? No wonder cars cost so much!!

This is one of those things the dems are so much better at than repubs. The dems would demagogue this to death but with the repubs this will never see the light of day.
