I don't recall a long snapper signing in recent years. How customary is it to offer a long snapper a scholarship on signing day?

He signed as a preferred walk-on.

Also, for years, we had a pipeline of long snappers coming from the same family. Now they have all graduated.

I believe he had been committed to Vandy for awhile. So is this our surprise recruit today? I'll take it, we all know how important our special teams were last year.

I rather our surprise recruit be a power position

Long Snapper is important if you don't have a great one. One reason Auburn Special teams are usually very good is we always get good kickers and good long snappers.

Yes, he "signed" a Letter of Intent. That's not the same as signing financial aid papers. He doesn't count as a signee and won't count against annual or overall limits. This is the same way Tennessee "signed" 35. Three of theirs don't count.
