To fix this problem:

Go To "My Controls."

Second section on Left most column: "Subscriptions"

Click on Forums or Topics and mark the selected ones to alter. Then drop to the bottom of the screen and alter the settings.

Actually, that only works when you don't use the "Fast Reply" feature. For some reason on Fast Reply, the check box for "Enable email notification of replies" is checked by default now. Unless you uncheck it before you submit your answer, you'll be subscribed to that thread. This didn't used to be the case. Stoic and I were discussing it the other day and he was looking into it.

In the "fast reply" section of the code, you can't just make a small edit from "checked" to "unchecked" on that checkbox?

Ah, my bad. Try setting it to "false" or just remove the checked property altogether.
