Did not read the thread....... Boom is just doing his job. Finding ways to cull the herd and get better players in to take the place of those that are culled.

Never forget: Coach Hothead cannot do anything unless Gus approves it first. Alexander did not play at all this year and that was Gus's call.

Gus (to his credit) realized that having a suck out loud defense severely compromised his "offensive genius"/"next great HC" reputation. Therefore; he hired a good to very good DC and assistants (he let one straggler stay, but that straggler has the AD in his corner). Gus wants to win. He needs Coach Hothead to help him win. Gus will go along with what Coach Hothead wants to do with the D and he should. Never forget that defense does win championships. It did this past season. It did when we won in 2010 and it failed us in 2013.

While there's no doubt that our defense was bad and at times awful, but to say it won us the championship in 2010 and cost us the one in 2013 is patently false. In 2010 we allowed 337 points. In 2013 we allowed 346. That's NINE points more. Defense isn't what won us 2010 nor is it what lost us 2013. We won in 2010 and the SEC title in 2013 because we lit up the opposition with the two highest scoring offenses in Auburn football history. 2010 we scored 577 points. In 2013 we scored 553.

By comparison in 2014 we allowed 347 (1 point more than 2013) but we scored 461 which was still the 3rd highest offensive total in Auburn history. Defense cost us way more in 2014 than it helped us in 2010 or 2013.

I think he is referring to not being able to making a stop when it counted.

Those who say we're different because we "help them find somewhere to land" have got to take the blinders off. Every school does this and every school helps the guys find a new spot, to a certain degree. Y'all can't vilify ua for doing it, then somehow sugar coat our doing it. Pull your heads out of the sand.

Sure we can...if we're talking about bammer, no holds barred...no need for sanctimoniousness here!

The D won the BCS championship game against Oregon for the 2010 season. The O got us to the game for certain, but the D won that game for us. In the BCS championship game the O scored enough to win although the D played over their heads in the 1st half, when it counted most, FSU's last drive, the D collapsed.

I was not talking about the season(s). I was talking about the actual championship games.

So Boom told him to pack his bags?

I think Boom counseled him that he might get more playing time elsewhere and that he would wish him well in making that transitiion.

The difference between the two championship games is that FSU was a much more individually talented and physically imposing team than Oregon. You can state that the defense "collapsed" all you want; but there is a giant difference between trying to hold a lead against Jameis Winston (probable #1 overall pick even with off-field concerns) and holding a lead against Darron Thomas (undrafted, currently playing Arena football).

The opponents we faced were simply on vastly different tiers. Last year's team beats 2010 Oregon as well, hell they probably beat this year's Oregon as well.

Not calling a play to defend a punt fake, not covering a kick properly (Jones had a cramp, but Parkey played the ball wrong), and basically playing the second half like we did this whole year (not enough pass rush, secondary getting destroyed) is abysmal either way

Agree with the first part, but Oregon would have beat us by 20 this year.

I'm talking about last year's team that blew the lead against FSU.

Oregon's downfall this year was the same downfall they had in 2010. Our team last season would have ran all over Oregon as badly as Ohio State did. Oregon is too finesse oriented on offense and I think our DL with Ford specifically would have slowed Mariota and company down with physicality and tenaciousness.

not covering a kick properly (Jones had a cramp, but Parkey played the ball wrong)

There was a second player on that kick return that ran completely out of his lane. That mistake, along with Jones' injury, opened the giant lane that Whitfield ran through. Parkey did literally nothing wrong; you can't expect to have two formation ****-ups with a world-class sprinter running the ball and not expect to get scored on. If you re-watch the play, Whitfield doesn't even do anything "special"....he literally just runs straight through a giant crease.
