4 out of 8 noncon opponents finished in the top 50 in the NET last season and 1 in the top 100. That's pretty strong with I believe, still 5 open spots for noncon opponents.

Auburn to host Virginia Tech in inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge

Virginia Tech is making its first trip to Auburn since 1973

Nathan King9 mins

Auburn’s usual conference-to-conference challenge is getting a makeover next season.

After 10 seasons of the Big 12/SEC Challenge, Auburn will pivot into an annual matchup with an ACC foe, starting this season with a home game against Virginia Tech in the ACC/SEC Challenge.

Auburn leads the all-time series against the Hokies 6-2, with the last meeting coming in 1999.

Virginia Tech is making its first trip to Auburn since 1973.

The Hokies are the latest nonconference addition to Auburn’s 2023-24 schedule, joining Baylor in the season opener in South Dakota, Indiana in Atlanta, USC and Penn in Neville Arena, and the Legends Classic in Brooklyn against Notre Dame, Oklahoma State and St. Bonaventure.

Still no respect for Auburn as a basketball program.

Examining Auburn basketball's nonconference matchups so far

The Tigers already have a strong nonconference slate for 2023-24

Nathan King2 hrs

Auburn’s nonconference resume was a saving grace last season, when a number of quality wins helped the Tigers remain on solid ground during what could have been a rocky finish to the season in terms of NCAA Tournament positioning.

And the Tigers could have an even stronger nonconference slate this year. Auburn is now up to nine non-SEC opponents on the docket for 2023-24, as Bruce Pearl’s team drew Virginia Tech in the new ACC/SEC Challenge, announced Wednesday.

The Hokies join a few other power programs already on Auburn’s nonconference schedule, which usually rounds out at 13 teams. There’s still slots to be filled, but with another intriguing matchup now added, let’s take a look at the opposition we know of so far.

VIRGINIA TECH

Location: Auburn, Alabama

Date: Nov. 29

Series: Auburn leads 6-2

Virginia Tech last season: 19-15, 11th in ACC, NIT first round

As part of the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge, Virginia Tech will travel to the Plains for the first time since 1973, looking to get back to the NCAA Tournament after missing the big dance last year for the first time since 2019-20. The Hokies have some experience to replace, after their two of their top three scorers from last season turned pro. Fifth-year head coach Mike Young has a veteran backcourt, including ACC Tournament MVP Hunter Cattoor. Note that, in contrast to the Big 12 matchups Auburn fans have been used to, this nonconference game comes before the start of SEC play, rather than the middle of it.

BAYLOR

Location: Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Date: Nov. 7

Series: Baylor leads 5-2

Baylor last season: 23-11, 3rd in Big 12, NCAA Tournament second round

Baylor looks to reload for another strong season under Scott Drew, but it certainly has to holes to fill. Its top scorers are off to the NBA, while guard LJ Cryer was one of the top players in the transfer portal, and ultimately chose Houston. The Bears received a big boost, though, when athletic forward Jalen Bridges decided to withdraw late in the draft process and return to the program. Baylor is bringing in another elite freshman class, though, ranked No. 5 nationally with a trio of top-50 prospects, including former Auburn target Ja'Kobe Walter.

PENN

Location: Auburn, Alabama

Date: Jan. 2

Series: Auburn leads 1-0

Penn last season: 17-13, 3rd in Ivy League

Penn guard Jordan Dingle (23.4 points per game) became the top scorer in the transfer ranks when he opted to leave the program this offseason and transfer to St. John’s. Naturally, Penn had a strong offense last season thanks in large part to Dingle, but its defense was No. 236 nationally, per KenPom. In line with many other nonconference home games under Pearl, Penn should give Auburn a decent challenge, but it would likely take a rough performance for the Tigers to drop this one in Neville Arena.

INDIANA

Location: Atlanta, Georgia

Date: Dec. 9

Series: Indiana leads 1-0

Indiana last season: 23-12, 2nd in Big Ten, NCAA Tournament second round

The Hoosiers’ hiring of Mike Woodson as head coach a couple years ago looks to be paying off, as the program has made the NCAA Tournament in each of his two seasons, and has another quality team on paper entering 2023-24. Jalen Hood-Schifino and Trayce Jackson-Davis were both drafted, leaving Indiana without its top four scorers from last season. However, the Hoosiers picked up the nation’s No. 2-rated transfer — former 5-star recruit and Oregon center Kel'el Ware — along with three top-100 recruits in the 2023 class. Much like Auburn last season, Indiana will be looking to a few now-former role players to step up in starting roles.

USC

Location: Auburn, Alabama

Date: TBD

Series: USC leads 3-0

USC last season: 22-11, 2nd in Pac-12, NCAA Tournament second round

Well, here's your big ticket. USC was already a strong nonconference matchup for the Tigers, as the Trojans head to the Plains for the return game of a home-and-home series, beating Auburn in California last season. Then Bronny James, a 5-star recruit and son of LeBron James, committed to the program, joining the nation's No. 1 overall recruit in the 2023 class, point guard Isaiah Collier. Oh, and leading scorer Boogie Ellisis back, rounding out one of the nation's most talented backcourts. This looks to be one of Andy Enfield's better USC teams — though the Trojans have won 20 games in seven of the past eight seasons — and the environment in Neville Arena should be spectacular.

OKLAHOMA STATE

Location: Brooklyn, New York

Date: Nov. 16-17

Series: Tied 2-2

Oklahoma State last season: 20-16, 7th in Big 12, NIT semifinals

Auburn won the Legends Classic back in 2019, and it’s an intriguing field for the Tigers to traverse this time around. All the teams will face one another, and it’s unclear at the moment who will be Auburn’s first matchup. The Cowboys bring back their veteran backcourt of Bryce Thompson and John Michael Wright, but the rest of the lineup could look very different. Oklahoma State lost three starters to the transfer portal, including new Ole Miss center Moussa Cisse, but have a whopping nine newcomers joining the program between the transfer ranks and the 2023 recruiting class.

NOTRE DAME

Location: Brooklyn, New York

Date: Nov. 16-17

Series: N/A

Notre Dame last season: 11-21, 14th in ACC

After 23 years, Notre Dame is starting a new regime after the program’s all-time winningest coach, Mike Brey, stepped down after last season. Brey led the Fighting Irish to 13 NCAA Touraments, including two runs to the Elite Eight. Notre Dame made a strong hire for his replacement, landing Penn State head coach Micah Shrewsberry, who took Penn State to the NCAA Tournament last season for the first time since 2011. As expected, a few of Notre Dame’s top players opted to transfer after the coaching change, including JJ Starling, the No. 5-ranked transfer player by 247Sports.

ST. BONAVENTURE

Location: Brooklyn, New York

Date: Nov. 16-17

Series: St. Bonaventure leads 1-0

St. Bonaventure last season: 14-18, 8th in A-10

The Bonnies had a losing season for the first time in a decade, but that seems likely to shift back in the right direction in 2023-24. Mark Schmidt’s team could be the most experienced Auburn will face in nonconference play, returning not only its top six scorers from last season, but also adding a pair of grad transfers. Schmidt usually has strong defenses, which will provide a quality test for a handful of new Auburn scorers early in the season.

I don’t get the disrespect part…Alabama was the best program wire to wire in conference and got matched with Clemson. There’s some other confounding matchups.

Auburn didn’t get a meh matchup with VT because we were meh last season or because we don’t have respect, unless there’s something I’m missing

Of the comulative we've been 1 of the best 5 SEC programs overall the past 5 years or so. We should be getting a top 5 ACC program, not the 11th best in Va. Tech.

Yeah, that should be the case, but these matchups very rarely make sense if you look at all of them. Alabama is just about as good as Auburn over that stretch and they're getting a nobody. UNC's matchup in Tenn doesn't make sense when you factor how good they are historically or how bad they were last year. NCSU is leagues better as a program than Ole Miss. UF is probably the 2nd or 3rd best team in conference historically and is playing WF

This isn't an Auburn exclusive thing

They def did not consider narratives very much, which is the most unfortunate part of this. Duke and Ark is the best matchup by far when you consider the Nolan Richardson days and their recent matchup in the tourney a couple years ago. Alabama/CU = Dabo/Saban. They have 4 Carolina schools and not one is playing South Carolina, I mean cmon man lol.

If we couldn't get Duke or UNC, I really wanted to get Virginia so we could get payback. That Virginia Tech matchup is kind of a stinker. Really looking forward to playing USC, as the talent level for both teams will be sky high.

Yes! I want UVA in Auburn, at the flagpole, after school.

Auburn headed to Huntsville for nonconference matchup in December

The Tigers will play in Huntsville for the first time in 20 years this season

Nathan King 8 mins

Auburn is headed a few hours north for what should be a well-attended nonconference matchup in the Rocket City.

The Tigers will play in Huntsville, Alabama, for the first time in 20 years this season, with a showdown against UNC Asheville set for Dec. 13 at the Von Braun Center, as announced by the program on Wednesday afternoon.

"I am excited to bring our team to participate in the Rocket City Classic and engage with the Auburn family throughout north Alabama, where we have some of the most loyal and passionate Auburn fans in the country," Bruce Pearl said. "To partner with our friends at Nations of Coaches to make this event happen will enable them to invest more in young men through their character-building and faith-based programs."

The matchup will mark a homecoming of sorts for both Auburn guard Denver Jones, a Huntsville native, and forward Chaney Johnson, who transferred from UAH.

UNC Asheville won both the Big South regular season championship and the conference tournament last season, en route to a 27-win season and the program's first trip to the NCAA tournament since 2015-16.

"UNC Asheville has been one of the top mid-major programs in this part of the country, so it will be a good test for us," Pearl said. "I am also excited to bring Denver Jones home as well as Chaney Johnson, who started his collegiate career at UAH."

Auburn's strong nonconference schedule is near completion, as UNC Asheville joins a slate that also includes home games against Virginia Tech, USC and Penn; neutral-siters against Baylor (Sioux Falls, South Dakota), Indiana (Atlanta), and Oklahoma State, Notre Dame and St. Bonaventure (Legends Classic in Brooklyn); and a road game against Appalachian State.

Auburn's SEC road schedule looks pretty hairy -- Bama, Tennessee, Arkansas and Florida. If we can avoid the late-season slide that crippled us last season, it could be a decent season this time around. That is, if a couple of our new guys can live up to the hype and make outside shots.

Baylor, Indiana and USC. Whew!

As for VaTech, we aren't impressed by the matchup, but ya know, I'm sure they aren't thrilled either. Coming into Neville can be kinda intimidating. hahaha

Auburn basketball is set to return to Huntsville for a matchup against UNC Asheville in the Rocket City Classic on Dec. 13, at the Von Braun Center, the team announced on Wednesday.

“I am excited to bring our team to participate in the Rocket City Classic and engage with the Auburn family throughout north Alabama, where we have some of the most loyal and passionate Auburn fans in the country,” Bruce Pearl said. “To partner with our friends at Nations of Coaches to make this event happen will enable them to invest more in young men through their character-building and faith-based programs.”

It will be Auburn’s third-ever game in Huntsville and their first since 2003 when they beat Grambling State 105-66.

UNC Asheville won 27 games last year en route to winning the Big Sky regular season championship and conference tournament.

“UNC Asheville has been one of the top mid-major programs in this part of the country, so it will be a good test for us,” Pearl added. “I am also excited to bring Denver Jones home as well as Chaney Johnson, who started his collegiate career at UAH.”

Tickets for the game will go on sale  Aug. 16 at 10 a.m. CT  on Ticketmaster and the Von Braun Center Box Office.

Auburn hoops announces full nonconference schedule

"When you set up your nonconference schedule, you send a message to your players and to your fanbase how good you think you will be."

Just under three months till the start of the season, Auburn basketball now knows every opponent it will face in 2023-24.

The program announced its full nonconference slate for this coming season on Friday afternoon. The matchups that weren't previously announced or reported are an exhibition game against Auburn-Montgomery, and other home games against Southeastern Louisiana, Alabama A&M and Chattanooga.

“When you set up your nonconference schedule, you send a message to your players and to your fanbase how good you think you will be,” Bruce Pearl said. “I don’t try to do it that way. Auburn's nonconference schedule features six high-major opponents, which will be the most in program history, besting last year's mark of five opponents.

“We have some other really tough, competitive non-conference games that are going to prepare us for league play,” Pearl said. “I want to give my assistant coach, Mike Burgomaster, a lot of credit for doing the work and research to be able to find and attract these kind of teams to play us. It is an analytics game and you have to have enough math to get you into the tournament.”

Here's Auburn's full nonconference schedule, which will conclude in early January before SEC competition begins.

Nov. 1 vs. AU Montgomery (exhibition)

Nov. 7 vs. Baylor (Sioux Falls, S.D.)

Auburn men’s basketball unveils 2023 non-conference slate

Published: Aug. 11, 2023, 1:09 p.m.

3–4 minutes

Auburn Basketball

Auburn men’s basketball to play tough non-conference schedule in 2023

Auburn’s men’s basketball team’s 2023-24 non-conference schedule is no walk in the park.

The Tigers’ program unveiled a non-conference slate that features a pair of potential preseason Top 10 teams and six Power 5 programs from out of the ACC, Big 10, Big 12 and Pac-12. The schedule’s six Power 5 teams is the most the Tigers have seen in program history, one upping five in the 2016-17 season.

“When you set up your non-conference schedule, you send a message to your players and to your fanbase how good you think you will be,” Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl said in a release. “I don’t try to do it that way. We try to compete for championships and we’ve won three in the last six years. This non-conference schedule will get us ready for what’s going to be the most competitive SEC since I’ve been at Auburn.”

From Neville Arena, the Tigers are set to host Auburn University at Montgomery in an exhibition game on Nov. 1, in addition to home games against Southeastern Louisiana (Nov. 10), Alabama A&M (Nov. 21), Virginia Tech (Nov. 29), USC (Dec. 17), Alabama State (Dec. 22), Chattanooga (Dec. 30) and Penn (Jan. 2).

Auburn’s battle with USC is set to be highly anticipated by Pearl, his team and Auburn fans.

“USC is a preseason Top 10 team that will come into Neville Arena with a very talented roster,” Pearl said. “To have a program like USC travel to Auburn for basketball is comparable to USC coming into Jordan-Hare Stadium and how good its program has been historically in football. USC has one of those kind of basketball programs now.”

The Tigers’ non-conference slate also features a season-opening neutral site meeting with the 2021 national championship-winning Baylor Bears at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D. Baylor is just one of four teams on Auburn’s schedule that reached the NCAA Tournament last season.

Auburn will also see Indiana at Atlanta’s Holiday Hoopsgiving and UNC-Asheville at Huntsville’s Rocket City Classic, as well as a trip to the Legends Classic in Brooklyn, where the Tigers draw Notre Dame and either Oklahoma State or St. Bonaventure.

“There’s no chance we are dumbing it down, especially with the teams that we are playing on neutral courts,” Pearl said. “We will take our team back to Brooklyn where we won the tournament in 2019. Having previously coached at Southern Indiana, I understand what basketball means in the state of Indiana. IU is a Top 10 team and will be a tough test in Atlanta.”

Auburn’s non-conference schedule features just one true road game: a visit to Appalachian State on Dec. 3.

The Tigers’ SEC schedule and tipoff times will be released at a later date.
