Auburn hoops reportedly set to face Indiana in Atlanta

Auburn basketball is headed back to Atlanta for the fourth straight season.

In what Bruce Pearl promised this week would be a matchup that would excite fans, the Tigers are set to take on Indiana as part of their 2023-24 nonconference schedule, CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein reported Saturday morning.

Pearl insinuated Tuesday that the game will once again be part of the Holiday Hoopsgiving event at StateFarm Arena.

The Tigers have played a neutral-site contest in Atlanta the past three seasons, beating Memphis and Nebraska before falling to Memphis last season.

"We've also, the last couple of years, played in Atlanta in a very special (Holiday Hoopsgiving)," Pearl said. "We played Memphis last year and we've got a great opponent coming in this year. I don't know if it's been announced yet, but we've got a great opponent coming in again in a December game down at the arena the Hawks play in. It's great to be here to thank our fans for all their support."

The programs have met only once before in their history, with Indiana defeating Auburn in the second round of the 1987 NCAA Tournament.

The Hoosiers have made the tournament in each of Mike Woodson's first two seasons at the helm, including a 12-8 Big Ten record and a 4-seed in March Madness.

I'd love to get Duke in the ACC matchup but deep down I know there's no way that doesn't go to UK. Wish they would be a little more creative than that. Just don't give us Clemson or NC State.

I wouldn't be surprised if we matched up with UVA

That match up at Neville would be charged for the fans. I hope they live up to their Auburn twitter hype if that happens. I'd want 'UVA to fear for their lives' type of energy. All within legal and moral bounds, of course. Barely.

All I say is we better win that game because of all the garbage that will come from both fans leading up

If we get UVa this year I think it's on the road. My bet is we get Wake Forest though.

AU has announced another game, and this is a big one, & very possibly the season opener. Very strong noncon. schedule and that's still without knowing who we play in the SEC-ACC Challenge...

If they beat a pretty solid Baylor, an incredibly talented USC, and a high end ACC team, this is probably the best regular season team Auburn’s had in the recent run, at least based on just wins

* this post is assuming an Auburn team that can beat those 3 doesn’t magically suck in other, likely easier games

Auburn sets season opener vs. Baylor at neutral site

The matchup is only the second season opener of the Pearl era to be played away from Neville Arena

Nathan King9 mins

Bruce Pearl teased a flashy season opener last month. And he didn't disappoint.

Auburn will begin its 2023-24 with a neutral-site contest against Baylor on Nov. 7, the program announced Thursday afternoon. The matchup will take place at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

"What a great opportunity to play a perennial top-10 program with a great coach like Scott Drew," Pearl said. "Our guys came to Auburn and the SEC, to play against the very best. We will get to see right away where we are as a team. A marquee matchup like this, playing a guaranteed Quad 1 opponent, will help us build our potential tournament resume and get us prepared for league play."

The matchup will mark only the second season opener of the Pearl era to be played away from Neville Arena. Baylor will be making a return trip to South Dakota after beating Gonzaga there en route to a 23-11 season and a 3-seed in the NCAA Tournament.

The teams last met in 2020-21, when No. 1 Baylor beat Auburn 84-72 in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge during the Bears' run to a national championship. Auburn is 2-5 in the series all time.

Baylor is the latest confirmed nonconference opponent for Auburn next season, joining USC in Neville Arena, Indiana in a neutral-site game in Atlanta, and the Legends Classic in Brooklyn that includes a field of Oklahoma State, Notre Dame and St. Bonaventure.

AUBURN — The Auburn basketball non-conference schedule for the 2023-24 season is nearing completion following the announcement of the Tigers’ matchup against Baylor to start the season. The game will be played in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on November 7.

Baylor has finished inside the KenPom top 20 in each of the last four seasons, including finishing inside the top five in the 2020, ’21 and ’22 seasons. ESPN’s “way-too-early” rankings place Baylor at No. 20 entering the summer, as the Bears are rebuilding their backcourt.

Who are Auburn’s top-ranked non-conference games by season during the Bruce Pearl tenure? Here’s that list according to KenPom’s final rankings.

No. 1 GONZAGA, 2020-21 SEASON

A young and rebuilding Auburn team played No. 1 Gonzaga in Fort Myers, Fla. in November, falling 90-67. Allen Flanigan led the Tigers with 20 points, including 15 in the second half. Auburn finished the season 13-14 overall. Gonzaga went on to be 31-0 before losing to Baylor in the national title game. Auburn didn’t play in the SEC Tournament or NCAA Tournament due to a self-imposed postseason ban.

No. 4 DUKE, 2018-19 SEASON

No. 8 Auburn faced No. 1 Duke and their incredibly hyped-up team featuring Zion Williamson and RJ Barrett in the Maui Invitational in Hawaii. The Tigers fell 78-72 after outscoring the Blue Devils by two in the second half. Jared Harper scored 22 points, hitting five threes in the game. Auburn continued their run against “blue bloods” of college basketball in the NCAA Tournament, beating Kansas, North Carolina and Kentucky consecutively on the way to the Final Four. Duke finished 32-6, earning a 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

No. 18 XAVIER, 2015-16 SEASON

Auburn made the return trip to Xavier in Pearl’s second season and the Tigers didn’t fare as well, losing 85-61 on the road in Cincinnati. Kareem Canty led Auburn with 25 points in the loss to then No. 10-ranked Musketeers. Auburn finished 11-20 that season, while Xavier finished 28-6, earning a 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

No. 19 PURDUE, 2016-17 SEASON

Auburn played Purdue during a preseason tournament in Cancun, falling 96-71 behind 17 three-pointers by the then No. 17-ranked Boilermakers. The Tigers trailed by only two at halftime. Danjel Purifoy led Auburn with 22 points. Due to vacated games, Auburn officially finished the season with a 6-14 season. Purdue finished 27-8, earning a 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

No. 19 WEST VIRGINIA/No. 20 MEMPHIS, 2022-23 SEASON

Auburn came back from a 16-point halftime deficit in Morgantown, W.V. last season to cut the lead to one point on two different occasions in the final minutes, but fell 80-77 in the end. Jaylin Williams led the Tigers with 18 points. Earlier in the season, then No. 11 Auburn fell to Memphis 82-73 in the Holiday Hoopsgiving game played in Atlanta in December. K.D. Johnson and Wendell Green Jr. each cored 14 points in the loss. The Tigers finished 21-13, earning a 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament. West Virginia finished 19-15, earning a 8 seed in the tournament, while Memphis finished 26-9, earning a 8 seed in the tournament.

No. 21 XAVIER, 2014-15 SEASON

Auburn knocked off Xavier 89-88 in double overtime inside then Auburn Arena during a December non-conference game in Pearl’s first season. KT Harrell’s 24 points led the way, as Auburn scored 48 second-half points. The Tigers finished 15-20 that season. Xavier finished 23-14, earning a 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

No. 22 UCONN, 2021-22 SEASON

No. 19 Auburn played then No. 22 UConn in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in November, falling 115-109 in double overtime. K.D. Johnson led Auburn with 27 points, 23 coming in the second half and overtimes. The Tigers finished 28-6, winning the SEC regular season title and earning a 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. UConn earned a 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament, using the season to springboard into their national title in the 2022-23 season.

No. 45 MIDDLE TENNESSEE STATE, 2017-18 SEASON

Middle Tennessee State finished 25-8 that season, but Auburn took care of business 76-70 in a December neutral-site game in Birmingham. Mustapha Heron and Jared Harper both scored 26 points in the win. The Tigers finished 26-8, winning the SEC regular season title that season and earning a 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

No. 46 RICHMOND, 2019-20 SEASON

No. 18 Auburn beat Richmond 79-65 in the final of the Legends Classic at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. in November. Samir Doughty led Auburn with 22 points. Auburn basketball’s 2023-24 conference slate is set.

For the league’s final season before it expands to 16 teams with Texas and Oklahoma, Auburn has learned its 2023-24 SEC opponents, announced by the conference Monday morning.

In addition to the team’s annual home-and-home rivals of Alabama, Georgia and Ole Miss — a group that will likely be altered once the league expands — Auburn will also welcome Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt to Neville Arena.

The Tigers’ road opponents include Arkansas, Florida, Missouri and Tennessee. Auburn will face Vanderbilt twice in its SEC schedule for the first time since 2015-16, and Mississippi State twice for the first time since 2018-19.

Auburn finished No. 7 in the league last season. The Tigers have won double-digit SEC games five times over the past six seasons — an accomplishment that’s only happened once before in program history (1957-63).

AUBURN 2023-24 SEC OPPONENTS

HOME: Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt

AWAY: Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Arkansas, Florida, Missouri, Tennessee, Vanderbilt

Auburn to host Virginia Tech in inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge

Virginia Tech is making its first trip to Auburn since 1973

Nathan King9 mins

Auburn’s usual conference-to-conference challenge is getting a makeover next season.

After 10 seasons of the Big 12/SEC Challenge, Auburn will pivot into an annual matchup with an ACC foe, starting this season with a home game against Virginia Tech in the ACC/SEC Challenge.

Auburn leads the all-time series against the Hokies 6-2, with the last meeting coming in 1999.

Virginia Tech is making its first trip to Auburn since 1973.

The Hokies are the latest nonconference addition to Auburn’s 2023-24 schedule, joining Baylor in the season opener in South Dakota, Indiana in Atlanta, USC and Penn in Neville Arena, and the Legends Classic in Brooklyn against Notre Dame, Oklahoma State and St. Bonaventure.
