Wesley McGriff's return is 'big' for 5-star Auburn target Zelus Hicks

JD McCarthy

~2 minutes

Wesley McGriff was a member of Hugh Freeze’s first coaching staff at Auburn and despite a brief stint at Texas A&M, he will be a part of the second one.

That development was significant for five-star safety Zelus Hicks. McGriff coaches the cornerbacks but he has taken the lead for Hicks.

“It was very important actually. I was shocked that he came back so quick,” Hicks told Auburn Undercover’s Christian Clemente. “He was only up there for like a week. When he came back it definitely surprised me and it was big that he came back. The main thing that he said to me today is that he’s here and he wants me here with him. He’s not going nowhere. After leaving, he’s not going nowhere. That’s big.”

From Georgia, Hicks has spent plenty of time on Auburn’s campus and that won’t be stopping soon. He visited for three games last season and after stopping by on Saturday, he plans on spending plenty of more time on the Plains.

“Oh yeah, I’m definitely going to be back as much as I can,” Hicks said.

He is the No. 31 overall player and No. 3 safety in the 247Sports composite ranking. The 6-foot-2, 185-pounder is also the No. 4 player from Georgia.

Auburn hires Will Redmond away from LSU as GM of Player Personnel

3–4 minutes

Auburn is expanding its personnel department with one of the nation's best. Will Redmond, who was FootballScoop's Director of Player Personnel of the Year in 2022, has been hired by Auburn as its General Manager of Player Personnel.

The news comes as Hugh Freeze looks to revamp his staff on and off the field heading into Year 2 on the Plains. And it's a big one behind-the-scenes.

"Redmond has quickly earned a reputation as one of the most organized personnel minds in the game as he’s helped guide LSU to back-to-back ten win seasons in Brian Kelly’s first two years," 247Sports' Cooper Petagna, a former player personnel staffer himself, told Auburn Undercover. "A person in his newly formed GM position is now more important than ever to the success of a college football program, not only when it comes to talent acquisition and retention but to leading and directing an essential arm of the program as it pertains to NIL efforts. With player movement at an all-time high, it pays to have forward thinking minds off the field that can keep your program nimble when it comes adapting in this age of college football."

Originally from Franklin, Tennessee, and a Vol in college, Redmond previously worked at Kansas as the Director of Recruiting and at Middle Tennessee State as the Director of Player Personnel. During his time as a student at Tennessee, Redmond worked as a media relations intern and then transitioned to an analyst role in the recruiting department.

Redmond joined LSU's staff in 2021, and was one of the few retentions for Brian Kelly during the transition phase.

“As an evaluator and roster manager, the challenge of rebuilding a locker room was truly exciting,” Redmond told FootballScoop previously. “Diving into the film, knowing the players would have to be immediate impact roster members set the tone for the offseason. We knew we not only needed great athletes, but great people as well.”

His efforts to help rebuild the Bayou Bengals roster and accelerate Kelly's rebuild helped him land FootballScoop's 2022 award.

“This is a tremendous honor for Will, and I’m very happy to see him recognized as the recipient of this award,” Kelly said to FootballScoop. “His ability to identify talent and his overall evaluation of players is vital to our program.

“Whether it’s identifying young players or evaluating players who may be in the transfer portal, Will has been able to adapt to the ever-changing landscape of recruiting and player evaluation. Congratulations to Will on this well-deserved honor.”

Auburn currently has AK Mogulla as Director of Player Personnel, with Grant Miller the Assistant Director of Player Personnel and Aaron Pittard a Player Personnel Analyst.

Former Auburn defensive lineman Justin Rogers will be finding himself at Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium from Feb. 27 to March 4 as he has accepted his invitation to the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, the program announced in a social media post Wednesday morning.

With Rogers heading to the NFL Combine, which is an invite-only event that allows NFL scouts to evaluate some of the top draft-eligible players, Auburn is now set to have at least four representatives in Indianapolis. Rogers will be joining the Tigers’ trio of defensive backs there as Jaylin Simpson, Nehemiah Pritchett and D.J. James have all accepted their invitations to the Combine.

Rogers’ invitation comes following his first and only season on The Plains, where he appeared in all 13 games, tallied 17 total tackles, two tackles for a loss and a sack. The most-productive outing of Rogers’ 2023 campaign came during his start against Ole Miss as he logged four total tackles, a tackle for a loss and a sack.

Following his performance against Ole Miss on Oct. 21, Rogers solidified himself as a starter along Auburn’s defensive front.

Before coming to Auburn for his junior season, Rogers played three seasons at Kentucky, where he appeared in 33 games, made 60 tackles and recorded five tackles for a loss.

Rogers announced his decision to forego his remaining eligibility and declare for the NFL Draft on Jan. 11.
