CFN's Potential League Contenders

Only one SEC team in this category:

72. Vanderbilt    2005 Record: 5-6

Why to get excited: Last year provided a bit of confidence; now the program knows it can be competitive in the SEC. There was a good enough rotation on the offensive line to expect it to be a strength this year, while RB Cassen Jackson-Garrison and WR Earl Bennett are tremendous talents to build around. However …

Why to be grouchy: … NFL quarterbacks like Jay Cutler don’t exactly hang around the Vanderbilt program. He was a difference maker who won’t be easily replaced. The defense has a major rebuilding job ahead, and now teams aren’t going to take the Commodores lightly. It’s never a good thing to be on Florida and Tennessee’s radar.

The number one thing to work on is: Everything around the punting game. Granted, Bryan Hahnfeldt was just getting his feet wet, but the Commodores need better field position and have to get more than 30.25 yards per try. They only got 6.33 yards per punt return from Bennett.

Biggest offensive loss: QB Jay Cutler

Biggest defensive loss: LB Moses Osemwegie
