Police: Mallet-Wielding Man Robs Subway Shop

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Police are searching for a man who they said robbed a Daytona Beach Subway restaurant with the use of a hammer or mallet.

The Subway located at 600 E. Speedway Blvd. was robbed Tuesday night after a man entered and ordered two sub sandwiches, according to police. While the employee was ringing up his order, the man removed a hammer or mallet from his waistband and demanded the employee to put the cash from the register in his bag, police said.

The man, who claimed to have a gun, also stole a tip jar, placing it in his bag, according to police.

Police said the assailant tried to leave the restaurant in a blue and tan 1989 Ford F-150, extended-cab pickup with a Tennessee tag 012 JTB but crashed into a fence, leaving the pickup inoperable.

He then fled on foot, police said.

He's described as a white man about 6 feet tall, weighing between 160 and 170 pounds and 30 to 35 years old. He has a medium complexion and short brown hair with a goatee or mustache, police said. He was wearing a dark-colored baseball hat with light-colored piping, a gray T-shirt with horizontal stripes, pants and white sneakers, according to police.

No one was injured.
