Think the too much bama thing actually started with the guy that came off the bench to tackle someone in the 50's or 60's or something. Updyke definitely has been using it as his own catch phrase though as a defense for his actions.

That guy's name was Tommy Lewis. Bammer to the bone, he saw they couldn't win honestly so he decided to cheat right on the spot. The Rice RB was headed for a TD in the 1954 Cotton Bowl when Lewis jumped off the bench and tackled him. The ref foiled Lewis and bammer however, and instead of declaring a penalty he awarded Rice the TD they'd certainly have scored had their back Dicky Moegle been allowed to continue down the sideline. The ref was right, as Moegle was ahead of the field and for years after that was considered the fastest back in the NFL. Rice beat bammer that day, but the Updykes sure tried to cheat their way to a win.

Since then they've learned to be more sophisticated with their cheating but it was Lewis who first offered the excuse, "I just had too much bammer in me."
