LOL.  He just started practicing at WR too late too earn playing time in the fall.  When he tested out at drills he tested through the roof which gave him more attention from the staff,  plus his work ethic was being used initially as motivation to push other guys.   Everything he got was earned by him, not given to him from a coach.

He may have started drilling in the position late but by no means was he not a WR...stats from HS

HIGH SCHOOL: Tallied 2,040 receiving yards as a senior for Coach Kevin Kelley … just the second receiver in state history to gain 2,000 yards in a season … Bruins won the state title in 2011 and 2014 … MaxPreps All-American … AHSCA all-star game … also played soccer … honors graduate … member of FCA and Green Club

Dude was a baller in HS as a WR and a walk on at AU....

"For Auburn" was implied.

“The only reps he got at receiver were in fall camp when the Tigers needed an extra body to replace D'haquille Williams, who missed the first six days of practice. “

Maybe he should've been tested earlier...

This quote speaks volumes to me:

"I don't think Coach (Dameyune) Craig saw him as a valid receiver, and I can't blame him given his size," Scott Hastings said. "He doesn't look like the typical SEC receiver... After Coach Craig left (in February), boy, it changed quickly.”

But I guess Hastings own dad is out of touch.

First lets remember that we are talking about a guy who has averaged  just over a catch a game for his career.  If he wasn't white he would barely be mentioned.  But we know how some of our base love their white players.

What kind of chance does a walk on kicker expect to get at wr in their first fall camp?????    Seriously

He was a walk on freshman kicker, he worked out as a kicker all summer.   He was lucky to get the opportunity that he got.  There were no reps for him in the fall season. all the earned spots were by  J Smith, Louis, Stevens, Truitt, M Davis, M Ray, R Davis and J Wallace.    Slayton red-shirted that year.  If anything Rhett and Gus should be blamed for thinking he wasn't a SEC WR material out of high school and was just an on-sides kicking specialist.  He is still listed as a kicker on the official roster from that year signalling that he was never considered a wr.  Gus' decision.

He did WR workouts all winter(opportunity was granted by someone on staff).   Kodi and Gus were not allowed to even coach the players until fall ball started in March.   So no sh#t things changed when they could practice again in Spring Ball, that is how it works.    Of course he got more reps with Kodi in the Spring that is how it works when a walk on kicker moves to walk on wr and participates in his first spring practice.  Truitt moving to rb and several seniors graduating also opened up reps. I think I recall one of the King boys getting reps that spring.  In reality Gus gave him the chance(nobody changes position without the head coaches approval on any college team),  Kodi happened to be the coach and gave him more reps because he was earning them.  Again sometimes people don't know who they should or should not be critical of because they don't understand the process/situation.  So it is correct that Wil said that Kodi noticed him in Spring Ball reps, his Dad just didn't know how things worked and that is why he said "I think" when he was interviewed.

That is all I am gonna say on it as I am pretty sure this is just another one of those Jeffy wasting time at work to make the clock move discussions!!!!!😃

Bingo. It's not even about discussing logic. That was out the window a couple pages ago.

Are you really going to accuse me of a racist agenda just because I proved it wasn’t some rumor that only Burns gave him a chance at being a receiver? What does his skin color have to do with anything? You just lost credibility moving forward from here.

Zero with Craig.

Hastings flat out said that NOBODY gave him a chance until Burns to play receiver. Burns believed in him and his dad flat out said that CDC didn’t see him as a receiver, but yet you’re the one arguing.

Occams Razor, dingbat.

Which brings up your last statement:

Who is wasting their time trying to prove “the dad is out of touch” or Hastings to be a liar? You’re out of your element here.

I usually agree with you on most things, but this is beyond ridiculous. Skin color has less than nothing to do with this. Your comment is a prime example of what is wrong with this country. This has NOTHING to do with his skin color.

It has to do with the fact he was signed as a walkon kicker... An onside kick specialist. No walkon kicker is just going to get reps at WR when they first step on campus. It has to do with his size. 5'9-5'10 165 lbs. Its completely understandable he wasnt given a shot at WR his first year. That I agree with you. And the fan base is thrilled some little guy, signed as a kicker, is one of the quicker players on the team. The fan base loves the idea of the underdog. Otherwise many of us in this state would be Bama fans... We love rooting for the underdog. It doesnt matter if they are white, black, red, yellow, green, or purple. Its about being excited for the underdog.

But those are the reasons. To suggest its because he is white is absurdly ridiculous.

That is IF he is even invited. Not everyone gets a combine invite. Just because you are a senior at a SEC school, doesnt automatically warrant you a spot in the combine.

Jeff not accusing you at all.  just stating general facts about some of our alumni, the ones that the vast majority of us are ashamed of, but exist.

That's fine.  unfortunately I have met some of these alumni and they exist.  Also as I stated "some"    I never stated all or implied the majority.   A couple post on this site, sadly.  Also know some that it works the opposite way.

What?  Hastings was a subpoint to Burns vs. DC. You made mentioning Hastings a race issue to @Tiger‘s delight. That’s not cool.

Yup I'm so delighted. I'm giddy. I've been waiting for this day for quite some time now.

Why exactly are you trying to drag me into this anyway? I didn't give a "love" react, I simply liked @auburnphan's post because I feel like made a good point.

I picked up on it after you liked a post that accused me of racism and then the subsequent post afterwards about general racism among alumni (which is even more irrelevant to the discussion.) Thanks for confirming.

Thanks for pointing the light to his walked backed response that still has zilch to do with anything about our conversation today. His first response initially implied that any lasting or ongoing Hastings discussion (which I started) has more to do with race ( still laughable) than an actual football conversation never mind tbe fact that Hastings is probably our second best deep ball threat. I’d argue those that want to make this a race issue, are the actual racists. JMO, flip.

then I dunno what to tell ya. But it's probably not a great sign that it struck a personal nerve for you.  It's not earth shattering news nor is it a stretch to say that a school in the deep south, in Alabama, would have some fans that are partial towards players that look like them. He didn't say you. In fact, it's not even limited to AU. You think if Cam Newton pulled half the antics Gronkowski does off the field they'd be treated the same? Why do you think there is a disparity there?

We even had a poster come on here during the Nick Marshall/JJ6 transition (I think it was during this particular period) start a thread and say he would like to see more white QBs at AU. I mean damn.

That’s bull**** and you know it. We have made fun of Jake Holland, criticized Stidham, and others.  Who the hell here had a Gray King poster just because he was white? Give me a break from that weak sauce.

Hastings literally has Auburn agility records and his athleticism is off tbe charts. It has nothing to do with his skin color boss, no matter how much you want it to be.

It's insane that people are pretending that race isn't an issue in the assessment and pursuant conversation about athletes.

And I didn't see any specific poster get accused of anything. BUT, it was Jeffy who initially said that "everybody" got mad that CDC didn't give Hastings a chance. Let's put aside for a second what a ridiculous thing that was to say. @auburnphan actually did Jeffy a kindness and played along with that idea by saying that if it actually was a major point of discussion, it's because Hastings is white.

My only issue with that is that people in fact never got mad about Craig not playing Hastings, but instead got mad about Kodi playing him. There were 2 reasons: 1) because he was a walk-on and 2) because he was small. It's funny, though, that nobody ever complained about Ryan Davis being too small? Why the discrepancy, I wonder? I brought this up many times in that period between Hastings getting some looks and people deciding that it was acceptable for him to play.

If you're pretending that athletes don't get viewed and discussed differently based on race, then you're 1) ignorant and 2) not helping the situation at all.

Sincerely,
A guy with a lot of "heart" and a "high motor" and who is "very coachable" and who has "a real love for the game". (I'd add "high football IQ" but I don't want to brag.)

I think you're looking way too deep into it. He did not say he was given a shot to be a WR because he was white. He said he's a popular fan topic of discussion because he's white. Particularly for a guy who has averaged ~1 catch a game. That's how I took it anyway. He made a good point about some of our fans, which overall isn't unique to AU. This has been going on forever. Larry Bird has history with it, etc...you ignored the Cam/Gronkowski comparison.

I mean you're free to disagree but it's clear to anyone reading that nobody accused you or anyone in particular of being racist. So not really sure why you got so triggered

The same people who bitched and moaned about Hastings even getting on the field are now saying that it doesn't matter that our top 2 receivers are gone because Eli Stove and Will Hastings are coming back. And that Will Hastings is going to be a leader on the team. You can't make this stuff up.

Never said he did. I asked why race had to do with anything in our conversation.

He was a walk on kicker and turned into a key contributor WR. That’s a remarkable success story from the start.  He had four conversions against Clemson, a long TD against LSU, and fizzled down the stretch until the Peach Bowl. Then he got hurt.

Honestly? It wasn't terrible but it wasn't great. "Dean is fast" is the biggest takeaway.
