Former Auburn pitcher scheduled to make his Major League debut

Casey Mize is scheduled to make his Major League Baseball debut as the starting pitcher for the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night.

The first player selected in the 2018 draft, the former Auburn two-time All-American is scheduled to take the mound at 7:10 p.m. CST for a road game vs. the Chicago White Sox. When that happens he will become the 52nd Auburn player to compete for either an American League or National League team.

With the regular minor league baseball schedule not being played this summer due to the covid-19 situation around the country, the game vs. the White Sox will also be the 2020 season debut for Mize, who has been a part of the team's practice squad prior to being moved to the active roster this week.

In three college seasons the right-hander’s record was 20-13 with a 2.96 earned run average. He led the SEC in strikeouts as a junior in 2018 with 156, the fourth highest single-season total in Auburn history. During that season he posted a no-hitter vs. Northeastern.

As a minor leaguer Mize put together an 8-4 record with a 2.71 earned run average while starting 26 games. He struck out 120 batters in 123 innings with 26 walks and posted a no-hitter in 2019 pitching in Class AA baseball for the Erie SeaWolves.

Mize, who came to Auburn from Springville High School, will be the 15th pitcher coached by AU’s Butch Thompson to reach the Major Leagues. While playing at Auburn the pitcher was a finalist for the Dick Howser Trophy and Golden Spikes Award that go to the top player in college baseball.

Yes, he is. He will get the ball on Wednesday, likely facing an old SEC rival, Florida product Dane Dunning, who is expected to make his major league debut as well.

“I’m just going to do what I can to help the team win ballgames,” Mize said. “That’s what it’s all about. It’s very exciting. All the clichés — it’s everything I’ve worked for, my lifelong goal, all that stuff — it’s finally here.”

You know it’s a big deal when you get Twitter shout-outs from Bo Jackson, which Mize got from his fellow Auburn alumn Tuesday.

Good outing for Mize.  He got through 4.1 innings, 7 hits, 3 runs, 6 Ks, 0 BB

He did a nice job!  Didn't seem nervous at all.

Set a record with the other pitcher for 2 first time pitchers getting 7 Ks in their debut.

Mize also set a Tiger record for a debut starter getting 7Ks with no walks.  The last pitcher to do that in MLB was Strasburg in 2010. Good company.

Good start for Mize. Glad to see it...
