What happened with Seaver Sheets? Bad attitude, grades? There was a great article on why his father (Ben) loved AU and the coaching staff when he chose us. He was highly ranked by Perfect Game. Looking occasionally at his Twitter and Instagram posts this past season, he was all AU. I assumed he was redshirted.

Harsin is burning down AU football. It’s happening so fast. I don’t believe any of us expected this in year two in our worst nightmares. I’m almost afraid to check up on AU football after work these days. Players. Recruiting and the portal. Players and recruits talk. 1) You can’t replace this many guys diving head first into the transfer portal. At this point, I don’t anticipate anything today as we close out this year’s recruiting class. Coaches. Harsin canned Bobo without a plan. 2) CBH found Davis after rummaging veraciously. No play calling or recruiting experience, but still a coach I think most AU fans were willing to get behind. Now he’s gone before he even started. 3) Still baffling to me, Derek Mason leaves for Ok St. Ok St? With no bonus or pay raise? 4) CBH talks to every DL coach he thinks he can persuade. Every top tier DL coach says “no.” CBH is relegated to bringing in an AU alum that’s currently an analyst with a history of short stints at various programs and sadly, a historically sub par recruiter. Taken together, all of this is not just a horrible look, it portends to more problems to come. It seems that kids or coaches don’t want to be associated with CBH, after one season. We are hemorrhaging. It has to stop before we bleed out. When we hired Harsin, we weren’t in shambles (i.e. Arkansas). However, be it his coaching style, demeanor, or sheer bad luck, he’s lit a match that AU can’t put out without another change. In the shape we’re in, which I believe will be worse after the 2022 season, we’re not going to get a Cristobal or Brian Kelly level coach. My advice, make CBH hire Jeff Grimes as OC right now with a $2M+ salary and with the arrangement that he’s the HC next season (barring an SECC from CBH). That part of the contract isn’t public. I’d go as far as making it a separate contract. Grimes has been here and knows AU. He’s prepared to be a HC. Coaches will sign on with Grimes. With Harsin, they’re only signing if they have no other options. Grimes’ offense just won the Big 12 and defeated Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl. He has extensive OL experience and knows coaches in the South. I’m no expert, I just know the bleeding has to stop. Setting up Jeff Grimes as the next HC is a plan. At this point, ADAG and the BOT have to have some plan before we’re a heap of ash and rubble.

We need Farmer and the Vandy kid (Steen). I don’t want to beat a dead horse, but Friend has been a huge disappointment. So many offensive linemen in the portal this season. Friend has either whiffed or failed to even get AU in the mix. Arguably, of all the position coaches, we need a strong OL coach and recruiter. Any rumors on a coaching change after the Feb signing day? The way CBH pulled the plug on Corn W., I’m surprised he’s allowed Friend to meander around this long. Big time fingers crossed we pull Citizen out of Louisiana. IMO, he has the potential to be as good or better than Tank. And Zeek, great job, as always! Best of luck mastering the “good husband” part of everything you have going on. I’ve done my best for 24 years and (in my case) the definition of “good” can vary by the day.

In 2019, Friend was responsible for utk signing 5 OL in a class of 22. Two plug and play 5-star OTs (Wayna Morris was one), one 4-star OG, and two three star OL. Looking back, that entire class now reeks of McDonald’s bags. Of all the position coaches, I still believe the strongest has to be our OL coach (the reason I wanted Cristobal pre CBH then prayed we’d roll a Brinks truck up to Jeff Grimes house after Bobo was canned). We are so far behind, and have been. As you said, Friend isn’t getting it done, and he’s not even close. We can’t hire a great OL coach soon enough.

Citizen?

Zeek! You are a machine! Does this mean we’re getting Citizen from lsu today?

Getting Citizen would be Huge. IMO, he has the skills to be as good or better than Tank. Unfortunately, I just don’t like our chances. As I understand it, he’s a February signee, which will give lsu (and other programs like uf that have joined the party) time to make up ground on AU. With Tank going pro after next season, I’d feel more comfortable having three horses in the stable (Hunter, Alston, and Williams). Now, if Cadillac and Trovon could continue the mo they’ve built up in LA and get Citizen’s autograph on ESD….
