Government is not competent

George Will had a brilliant take on the government and whether it was competent or not "You asked can we trust the government to do its job? What isn’t its job these days? I’ve just made a list. It’s fine-tuning the curriculum of our students k-12, monitoring sex on campuses, deciding how much ethanol we should put in our gas tanks, it’s designed our lightbulbs, and it’s worried sick over the name of the Washington football team. Now this is a government that doesn’t know when to stop.” http://dailycaller.c...-not-competent/

While I agree with GW that the American gov't. is being hijacked in some sectors for special interests there are some entities within the gov't that are very competent. Our military comes to mind.

Well yes. It works good for what it is supposed to do. It is doing things it hasn't got the authority to do and it is making a royal mess. That is more the point of what he was saying. Put it back in its proper role as defined by the constitution and quit trying to micromanage every little thing.

One issue that I have with how the Obama administration has directed our military is that they are being re-tasked for non-military use, specifically the assignment to Liberia. Our military isn't intended for such a use.

I disagree, but I'm worried about the planning of the mission. We have responded to Haiti, Chile, Indonesia, Japan, etc. and our abilities are quite impressive.

Certainly are except when they are hand cuffed by a CiC and that seems to be the norm these days

Hard for our military to to do it's best job when the CIC and SECDEF can't make fundamental decisions.

That has been a big point of contention with me for a long time. Many of the commanders are more concerned about getting their next promotion and making it to retirement than they are about doing the job they are there for. Political correctness has infected the military in a big way over the years.

The purpose of our military is to protect our homeland, period, not medical support, except when directly associated with a conflict of American interest. Are we going to war in west Africa ? No. Sending our military to west Africa in response to the ebola crisis is an inappropriate use.

The appropriate agency that should be tasked with addressing ebola in west Africa is the National Disaster Medical System, a division of FEMA. Although the military works in concert with this department upon demand they are not properly trained for acute medical interdiction. Reports are that the military will be acting in a medical capacity in west Africa. Consider the reverse, Would you want the NDMS acting in a military capacity ? No. Even specialists who are trained to work with ebola and have done so for years have been compromised leaving dozens of physicians dead. About 3,000 untrained military personnel will be potentially exposed to this contagion. They best be quarantined for 30 days before returning to the USA.

To reiterate, our military is not designed or trained for medical interdiction. Such use of the military is the new form of "mission creep".

well that is a good use for the military. Use them for meals on wheels type of thing but never to protect the interests of this evil racist country.
