Itchy I get what you're saying and I'm not advocating wholesale shutdown of agencies all at once. We do have to start phasing them out and there are some that could go away right now and not be missed at all. What responsibilities of say HHS that are worth keeping could be folded into something else. Education is another one. The idea of just making it work smarter is unworkable. Government, especially at the federal level, is an animal unto itself. It exists just to keep itself going and growing bigger. If you don't start reducing it's role in our everyday life then you'll never get anywhere. It's bureaucratic by it's very nature and the leviathan just feeds and feeds until it starts to strangle the life out of the economy. Smarter government is an oxymoron and a fantasy that sounds good in theory but in reality the only smart government is a smaller one. The best government is the one that does only what is absolutely necessary and nothing more. The framers put the limitations on it by design. Reduce it down to the level to where it is capable of doing it's constitutional functions and nothing more..
