How good were the "1970" Auburn Tigers?

After updating my data to go back to the 1969 season, I decided to rank the teams over the past 36 years. I ranked the teams according to their rankings in seven different categories.

1) Overall win pct, 2) Strength of schedule, 3) Scoring margin, 4) Win pct against teams over .500, 5) Yards per game on offense, 6) Yards allowed per game on defense, and 7) Win pct against ranked opponents.

Here are the results:

Rnk- Year- W L T

7.14- 2004- 13 0 0

7.86- 1970- 9 2 0

25.71- 1998- 3 8 0

26.00- 1978- 6 4 1

26.86- 1977- 4 7 0

27.29- 1980- 5 6 0

27.71- 1976- 6 5 0

27.86- 1981- 5 6 0

29.57- 1975- 4 6 1

The 2004 team finished at #1 with the following rankings: They had the #1 win pct. They were only #28 in terms of SOS. They were #2 in scoring margin. They were #4 against teams with winning records. They were #5 in offensive yards per game and #9 in yards allowed per game. They were #1 against ranked opponents.

I never saw the "70" Tigers actually play but they finished at #2 with the following rankings:

They were #11 in overall win pct. They were #17 in SOS. They had the 4th best scoring margin. They had the second best win pct against teams with winning records ( 6-1-0 ). They had the #1 offense and the #12 defense. They were tied for #8 against ranked opponents ( 2-1-0 ).

How about the "Amazins"? Despite having the 35th best offense, they finished at #8 on my list. They competed against the 8th toughest schedule over the past 36 seasons and lost 1 game. They were 6-1 against teams over .500 and 5-1 against ranked opponents.

The 1993 squad finished at #9 mainly on such a weak SOS. They competed against the 34th toughest SOS over the past 36 seasons. They faced only 2 teams with a winning record but both were ranked.

I never saw the 1970 team play, so I would personally rank the 1983 team at #2. I would probably rank the 72 squad at #3, followed up with the 1993 team at #4. The 1993 Tigers were not a great team but played "great" as a team.

Thoughts?

Well I can say something about the Amazins. I believe I was 11 at the time and that team just had tons of heart and "get it done" doggedness. I thought the Amazins came the year after Sullivan's senior year. Anyway, there was really nobody special on that team. The only real standout was Terry Henley, and he ran as hard as anyone ever has. They just played together as a team ought to. They had a chip on their shoulder b/c no one thought they would be any good after Sully and Beasley left. If I remember correctly their first game was against :msu: (there) and Shug Jordan took them over there w/ 7 running plays and 3 pass plays and they won. They didn't beat anybody real bad during the year, they just won. It was an outstanding effort and a good story. That was the same year during the Florida game, which they won, that during a pileup after a running play that someone from :uf: bit Terry Henley on the leg. He said after the game they must have bit him on the leg b/c :uf: didn't eat their wheaties before the game. War Eagle ! :au:

Yeah, I would say that the 98 schedule was brutal for us.

And we never really got blown out in any games.

We lost to Virginia 19-0

Arkansas 24-20

Florida 24-3

Tennessee 17-9 (National Champions)

Georgia 28-17

Alabama 31-17(after getting ahead 17-0)

LSU 31-19

But the 03 scedule was brutal to.

USC,LSU(NC), TOP 10 Georgia, then Tennessee, Arkansas, Ten win Ole Miss, bowl team Georgia Tech(bowl game)Wisconsin
