It was a sloppy beginning and a sloppy ending that was too much for the Auburn Tigers to overcome. Auburn's inability to consistently run the football hindered a Gus Malzahn offense reliant upon establishing the run. The primary difference in the game was turnovers and third down. Auburn's inability to generate the big play will continue to haunt the Tigers unless the coaching staff finds a way of making such plays. Through three games, Auburn has produced only one play over 40-yards. In a physical matchup, Auburn needed to reclaim its offensive identity; the Tigers failed miserably. Auburn has yet to establish their running game against an FBS opponent, which is essential for setting up the deep throws over the top. LSU won the line of scrimmage when it came to pass protection and Auburn is not as dominant up front as portrayed by the media this season. Much like the Washington game, Auburn could not establish a consistent pass-rush unless they blitzed, something Kevin Steele would rather not depend upon. The defense remained on the field and could not end drives when it was needed the most. Once again, turnovers and penalties plagued the Auburn football team and they are not good enough to overcome these issues against a worthy opponent. Auburn did manage to overcome a 10-0 deficit to build a 21-10 third-quarter lead. Auburn attempted to remain aggressive in their play-calling, but it was likely more of a necessity due to the lack of a consistent running game. Auburn overcame a heart-breaking loss last season to LSU to win the west, so there is plenty to play for this early in the season. This loss, however, is different from last season because Auburn did not become conservative after building a 20-0 lead. The concern moving forward is a weak offensive line, the lack of a running game and a defense that allows more big plays than they generate. Hopefully, there will be enough leadership on this team to focus on improving because "finger pointing" will only compound Auburn's current issues. If Auburn is going to improve, it will need to begin up front and on both sides of the line of scrimmage. jared52 4,358
Wow, it was worse statistically that I thought it would be. Wondering when the last time AU had such a bad pass percentage on O and D. gr82b4au 5,583
We all knew the OL was an issue. The real shocker was the DL. AUbritt 627
This is one of your best analyses ever, Stat. We couldn't convert consistently on 3rd downs, while LSU did a good job of it. We couldn't dominate the line, while LSU did a good job of it. We couldn't protect the ball, while LSU did a good job of it. LSU wins. 1 Link to comment https://www.aufamily.com/topic/163969-lsu-game-report-card/#findComment-2916073 Share on other sites

lala 327
We miss a rush end terribly and that is absolutely necessary in an4 man front. Barnacle 9,168
Summed up very well. And thank you for not mentioning the officiating. Win4AU 4,294
Wonder what the breakdown is for 1st down play choice. Is passing more resulting in better yardage? It seems like Auburn is running two offenses sometimes. A Gus offense(jet sweep, zone run, play action deep throw) and a Chip offense(pass heavy, slants, screen pass). Washington was heavy Chip, ASU was more Gus. LSU started Chip then it looks like Gus took over mid game and More Chip heavy to end? Auburn was successful going fast yesterday but it’s harder to go fast in Chip’s offense. Any thoughts? Indeed …thanks Stat......revealed in numbers what we saw on the field..... O getting most of the blame but when a defense that was supposed to be one of the best 4 or 5 in the nation gets handled like they did yesterday and could not get off the field ......that's stunning...….and not a good sign for the rest of the season unless Steele can find some answers. Per JMR on his "What I think I saw" Post: I am not one to believe “the officials are out to get us”. But LSU, which has had problems with their offensive line this season, obviously made a conscious decision to hold until the officials called it. They never did call it, and the holding was rampant on both pass and run plays from beginning to end. I’ll admit, the no-call on Greedy Williams holding Darius Slayton with both hands in clear view of a huge play, followed by the tacky PI call on Jamel Dean, did make me consider jumping over to the conspiracy side of things. AUMicBK 124
Here's a look at what our guys did on the career stats charts: * Darius Slayton reached 1,000 career receiving and all-purpose yards. Slayton also passed Ryan Davis as the team career leader in TD receptions, with 7. * Jarrett Stidham passed Nick Marshall for 10th all-time in completions. Looking forward to Arkansas: * Eli Stove needs 60 all-purpose yards for 1,000 career * Kam Martin needs 103 rushing yards to reach 1,000 for his career * Stidham needs 69 yards of total offense to reach 4,000 * Ryan Davis needs 100 yards receiving to enter the top 20 all-time (Greg Taylor) Link to comment https://www.aufamily.com/topic/163969-lsu-game-report-card/#findComment-2917841 Share on other sites
