Optics are the real consequence. There is a reason why the phrase "Let them eat cake" is quoted and used so much. People don't like it when their leaders or elected "public servants" live by a different set of rules or have the special ability to avoid problems and discomforts that their citizens or constituents are having to deal with.

It fosters anger ( as you see), distrust, and a belief that our leaders may not be seriously thinking about the outcomes of their policies or actions if they know they and their families wont have to deal with any negative consequences of those policies. It's just a natural human desire to want your leaders to really know and experience what difficulties you and your loved ones are having, even if they can't immediately solve the problem or do anything to prevent it directly, you know that they are still suffering like you are and will make decisions and policies with the present, real condition in mind.

he is not in his position for others but for himself in my humble opinion. imagine if you will an alamo filled full of ted cruzes. think about it..........

Leaked texts dispute Sen. Ted Cruz’s claims about Cancun trip amid Texas crisis

A series of leaked text messages have thrown cold water on Texas Sen. Ted Cruz’s claims his trip to Cancun, Mexico, was part of a vacation for his daughters and their friends.

The Republican senator left Texas on Wednesday as his state faced a crisis from a deadly winter storm that left millions without power or clean drinking water. Cruz initially claimed he only accompanied his family as a chaperone for his children, who were on school break, and didn’t plan to stay.

But texts obtained by The New York Times and local news publication Reform Austin reveal Cruz’s wife messaged friends about the trip to get away from the “FREEZING” weather. They also suggest the family planned the getaway at the last minute and intended to stay in Cancun for close to a week.

“Anyone can or want to leave for the week? We may go to Cancun there is a direct flights at 4:45pm and hotels w capacity,” Heidi Cruz wrote early Wednesday morning. “Seriously. Covid test to come back which we will take there.”

She reportedly invited friends and neighbors to join them at the Ritz-Carlton in Cancun, where she noted that the price for a hotel room was $309 plus tax.

“Are you guys warm enough …. We have a fireplace! Let us know. Our house is FREEZING tho is why we stayed w ….. last night couldn’t stand it anymore,” she added in the thread, which was partially redacted.

Even before the text messages emerged, Cruz was facing criticism from leaders in both parties, as well as his constituents. He returned to the U.S. Thursday and admitted the trip was “obviously a mistake.”

“In hindsight, I wouldn’t have done it,” he told reporters Thursday.

Ted Cruz initially claimed he was “trying to be a good dad” but also let it slip on Thursday night that he had planned to stay in Cancun through Sunday. During an interview on Fox News, Sean Hannity attempted to defend Cruz.

“You went and you took your daughters to Cancun and you came back,” Hannity said. “I think you can be a father and be the senator of Texas all at the same time and make a round-trip quick drop-off trip and come home.”

Cruz agreed, but later contradicted Hannity’s claims. The Texas lawmaker said his house had lost power and heat for two days, so his girls asked if they could travel someplace warmer.

“I had initially planned to stay through the weekend and work remotely there,” Cruz said. “But as I was heading down there, you know, I started to have second thoughts almost immediately because the crisis here in Texas, you need to be here on the ground. As much as you can do by phone and Zoom, it’s not the same as being here.”

The controversy has opened up the two-term senator, a key ally of former President Donald Trump and may run for president again in 2024, to bipartisan criticism. Protesters greeted Cruz at the airport Thursday with signs and chants saying “Resign!”

“That’s something that he has to answer to his constituents about,” Texas GOP Chair Allen West said.

The Associated Press reports about 325,000 homes and businesses remained without power in Texas lat Thursday, down from about 3 million a day earlier. Utility officials said limited rolling blackouts were still possible and a boil water order was issued for 7 million residents in Texas, the nation’s second largest state, after record low temperatures damaged infrastructure and froze pipes.

The winter storm has also been blamed for at least 56 deaths across the South.

Federal emergency officials sent generators to support water treatment plants, hospitals and nursing homes in Texas, along with thousands of blankets and ready-to-eat meals, officials said.

Also, my guess is he threw the kids under the bus because he knows it isn’t a good idea to throw the wife under the bus. Looks like this trip was more of her idea and he didn’t have the backbone (shocking) to tell her to suck it up. On one hand, it’s a bad decision...but one I think most married guys would understand why he did what he did. But in reality I’m sure given his position he could have found a non resort place to warm up and shower etc.

It was dumb.

Attempt to explain it made it worse. Cover-up and "crime", so to speak. First rule of holes is "if you're in one, stop digging."

Not the first politician to be hoisted by his own petard, won't be the last.

Moving on...

No doubt Ted Cruz blew it and deserved to get lambasted. Again though I see a double standard from the media. CNN and MSNBC covered it over and over and yet when Newsom in California was the hypocrite they ignored it. While lambasting Cruz over and over they basically ignored the Cuomo story which is about people dying.  I really didn't mind them lambasting Cruz over and over I just wish they had done the same thing when Democrats did similar things. They basically ignored it when Mayor of Austin went to Cabo.  Now I do agree Ted deserved his treatment especially since he piled on the Mayor of Austin for doing the same thing I just wish we had the same standard for everybody.

Subpar optics. But in a contrary vein this is about as goofy as the outrage Nancy got for getting a haircut, or Denver mayor traveling for holidays after telling everyone else to "stay home as much as you can."

I just don't understand what the consequence was of Cruz's absence. Would be far worse if all the plumbers and linemen dipped out on vacation!

He could be doing something here though.  It's actually beyond just optics.  Beto activated his machine to reach out to 700,000 elderly and at risk people in the state to connect them with resources.  AOC, who doesn't even live here, raised $2M in a day for relief efforts.

Cruz can do something to try and help the community.  He's an elected leader and needs to act like it.

I look at it this way: I'm in leadership at my company.  When **** hits the fan, I don't dare take an impromptu vacation.  Instead I make sure that everything is back to normalcy before even thinking about time off.  Same logic applies here.

Adler (Austin Mayor) has been getting skewered by his own constituents.  He's certainly not getting a pass where it matters, which is with the voters.

Cruz, is everything bad about Washington DC. He is over educated and too distant from the people. Just like everyone else in Washington DC. The trip was a mistake, obviously, He made the mistake of flying there Coach. If he had taken a private jet, like the Chosen Few would have done and do everyday, that had burned thousands of pounds of jet fuel just for him, no one would have seen him and no one would have said a word.

I am not so sure what exactly he could have done in Texas, in his comfortable home, that was, I am 99% sure still had power, water and heat, while some areas of Texas suffered. The cold wave will be gone in a few days and all forgotten, if not forgiven.

Folks, this is Modern Day America. I dont think any of our so-called leaders give a flying **** at a rolling donut for us or our plight. The shrewder ones just use private jets and give us a real FU by ignoring Climate Concerns at the same time.

Does anyone here really think that anyone is Washington gives a damn about the middle class?

You really underestimate the anger in this state about what is still going on.

They do not care about us in the slightest. The American elite class is some of the worst people to ever exist.

Ironically, Ted did not raise $3.2 mil USD to help Texans. Nor did he go out of his symbolic way to work a food kitchen. Cruz is beyond out of touch.

I have no doubt they are pissed...for now. In another week or so there will be some new shiny object and they will be off to another MAGA news story.

Katrina happened in 2005, a non-election year.  It never left the political spectrum and those in leadership paid a price at the polls.  This is a Texas version of that.  People are still lining up for hours just to get clean drinking water.  I'm telling you man, midterms here and 2024 are going to be real interesting.

If anyone, Right or Left would challenge the Elites. I would 100% support that.
