Will Democrats rush to the defense of Webb's staffer by using the recent circuit court decision on the DC gun ban? Will Republicans?

Webb Aide Arrested for Gun Possession

WASHINGTON (AP) - An aide to Sen. Jim Webb was arrested Monday when he entered a Senate office building with a loaded pistol, Capitol Police said.

Spokeswoman Sgt. Kimberly Schneider said the aide was charged with carrying a pistol without a license and possessing an unregistered firearm and unregistered ammunition.

The office of Webb, D-Va., identified the aide as Phillip Thompson and said he was "a former Marine, a long-term friend and trusted employee of the senator."

"To our knowledge, this incident was an oversight," the office said in a statement.

The weapon was revealed when the aide went through an X-ray machine at an entrance of the Russell Senate Office Building, said police spokeswoman Schneider. She said the man had a loaded pistol with two additional loaded magazines.

Capitol Police just sent out a message that said:

A man entered the Lower Delaware & C Street Door of the RSOB at approximately 10:50 a.m. An administrative search (x-ray machine) revealed that he was in possession of a loaded pistol with 2 additional fully loaded magazines. It was determined that he did not have a license to carry a pistol in the District of Columbia. He was in possession of an unregistered firearm and unregistered ammunition. He was subsequently placed under arrest and charged with Carrying a Pistol Without a License, Unregistered Firearm and Unregistered Ammunition.

Rumor has it, it was one of Sen. Jim "Fightin!" Webb's (D.-Va.) staffers...

A source called Human Events Editor Jed Babbin and told him "Capitol Police apparently broadcast the arrest on their personal radios and then went quiet" prior to the release of the note above. Stay tuned.

Update by Jeff: According to Drudge, the staffer was arrested for "inadvertently' holding the senator's loaded gun, according to a person close to the investigation. A Senate staffer reports that Thompson was arrested for carrying the gun in a bag through security at the Russell Senate Office building while the Senator was parking his car."

What is "unregistered" ammunition? Does ammo also have to be registered? What if you didn't have a weapon, only ammo?

I don;t blame him for having a gun. Only the criminals and police have guns in D.C.. I'd rather be arrested than shot.

I agree.....D.C. is a war zone in of itself. Much like New Orleans.
