At Instapundit, Glenn Reynolds is taking on Andrew Sullivan in the endless gun debate: "ANDREW SULLIVAN ASKS: "If gun rights are civil rights, why would anyone feel the need to hide the fact that they own one?"

Reynolds, being polite, answers with a counter-question: "If abortion is a civil right, why would anyone object to having a newspaper publish a searchable database of people who've had one?"

The impolite question for Andrew lingers unspoken: "If being gay is a civil right why would anyone feel the need keep private the fact that they are one?"

The answer for guns, abortions and being gay is the same. Because it is a private matter and none of anybody's business. I'm not sure where Andrew stands on outing the entire gay population of the United States. Can't remember if he's for or against privacy. Maybe he's for outing everybody, but I don't think the policy would survive a nationwide gay referendum. I don't think it could get even him elected mayor of Provincetown.

I don't care if you know I have guns. Just so long as the government does not know. The government has proven to be less than capable with private information. Not to mention, when the world goes to hell, I don't want some Natzi showing up on my doorstep asking for the only thing that might keep me and my family from being victims.
