No vacancies at Georgia

BY DAVID CHING - dching@ledger-enquirer.com --

Mark Richt has been saying for weeks that Georgia's recruiting class was full.

The events of the last week provide evidence that he wasn't stretching the truth.

Two highly regarded recruits who expressed an interest in Georgia -- Ohio offensive lineman Zebrie Sanders and Buford (Ga.) defensive tackle Omar Hunter -- recently committed to other programs, in part because Georgia simply doesn't have room for them.

"They just ran out of scholarships, period," said Dean Legge, publisher of Scout.com's Georgia affiliate, dawgpost.com.

Sanders, a new Florida State commitment, told the Dayton (Ohio) Daily News that Georgia never pulled its scholarship offer, contrary to Internet rumor, but the Bulldogs may have filled their last spot when Jefferson County's A.J. Harmon changed his commitment from Clemson to Georgia.

"I know Sanders was very interested in Georgia, but the way it always looked was it was either Harmon or Sanders, but it couldn't have been both," Legge said.

Same thing with Hunter, who admitted when he committed to Florida this week that his decision was influenced by Georgia's lack of an available scholarship.

Legge said the likeliest possibility for an addition to this class would be for Richt's staff to sign a player who is not expected to academically qualify and place them in a junior college or prep school. He said two possibilities in such a scenario would be Lynchburg, Va., offensive tackle Bobby Massie or Tucker, Ga., safety Neiko Lipscomb, who plans to visit Athens this weekend. And even those possibilities are slim.

"Lipscomb or Massie could sneak in on signing day, but it doesn't feel like that's gonna happen," Legge said.

Even if Georgia doesn't add another commitment to its 25-man class, the group will rank among the nation's best as long as there aren't numerous defections. Legge said it would be "stunning" if the Bulldogs's class didn't finish in Scout.com's top five. Georgia's current crop of commitments is rated third in the nation by Scout.com and fourth by Rivals.com.

And Legge said the group already addresses Georgia's needs at every position.

"Across the board, they got everything they needed," he said, pointing to additions at defensive tackle, defensive end and receiver. "They needed playmakers and they got them. Now it's just time for them to live up to the expectations for them -- and some of them have some lofty expectations

It's interesting, because some of the prospects left are good ones and Auburn is still in the mix. Come on Tubs.

Correct. We are out now.

Zebrie waited too long. What else could we do? We asked him to commit and told him of the situation and he didn't so it isn't our fault.

Richt has made it a priority the last 3 years to finish early and he has done a very good job of it.

Sure, we lost 2-3 guys from "commits" earlier but on the whole we kept the high majority
