Trent Mummey Named SEC Player Of The Week

Recommended Posts

Trent Mummey has been named the Southeastern

Conference Player of the Week after a week in which he hit .500 with

three home runs, six RBI and six runs scored as Auburn went 3-1 with a

series win at No. 7 Arkansas over the weekend. The win vaulted Auburn

(30-15, 12-9 SEC) into third place in the SEC West, two games behind

co-leaders Arkansas and Ole Miss (14-7 each) with three weeks left in

the regular season.

Mummey, who missed the first 28 games of the season with an injury, has

been on a tear since returning to the lineup. In four games last week he

had seven hits, drew two walks and was hit by a pitch for a .588 on base

percentage and a 1.143 slugging percentage. He also hit a pair of sac

flies and was a perfect 3-for-3 in steals while in the field he made

perhaps the defensive play of the weekend on Sunday when he made a

diving catch to end the fourth inning with runners on first and second

and Auburn holding a tenuous 3-0 lead.

“As a defender you look for those plays, those are big plays in the

game and it kind of picks up the whole team,” Mummey said after

Sunday’s game of his diving catch. “I like being a play-maker. I saw

there were two strikes and I was shaded just a little to the off side

and he got it off the end of the bat. I knew if I didn’t get to it it

was probably going to be one or two runs. I just want to do my best for

the team and fortunately I was able to come up with the catch.”

In 17 games since returning to the lineup, Mummey is hitting .388 with

three doubles, nine home runs, 25 RBI and 22 runs scored, drawing eight

walks and getting hit by a pitch twice for a .462 on base percentage and

a .836 slugging percentage, helping Auburn to a 12-5 record and series

wins over then-No. 3 LSU, Kentucky and Arkansas.

With its series win, Auburn returned to three of the national Top 25

polls as Baseball America ranked the team 19th, Rivals.com put Auburn at

No. 20 and Collegiate Baseball ranked it 24th.

Auburn returns to the diamond at 6:30pm CT on Friday when it plays host

to Mississippi State in the first of a three-game series. Game times for

the other games are 3pm on Saturday and 1pm on Sunday.
