Jade Carey and possibly Jordan Chiles and Leanne Wong leaving NCAA and returning to elite. Seems like a new trend. Looks like they are starting early to train for the Olympics.
Β

Let’s hope Suni stays with us for another year…

Β

Well we at least have the Ace in the hole with both her coaches being twins.Β  They can continue to get her ready for elite while also competing collegiate.Β

Suni mentioned in an interview that she most likelyΒ won’t come back to AU after the 2024 Olympics… sheΒ is not planning to graduate and currently just maintaining eligibility by taking online classes.

I bet she will finish that degree slowly or later in life.Β  Auburn has that effect.Β  But I'd love to have her one more year at least. Their sport calls for them to be at their peak in their college years so it's a lot earlier than the late 20s and early 30s like most sports.Β

I wonder if that would change if she doesn’t make the Olympic team in 2024.

That would be highly unlikely (barring injuries or an off-year). The 2024 team could be the least competitive team in a long time.

Simone Biles might return as a specialist but I don't see that happening.

- Suni would be the star gymnast of this team

- Konnor McClain (basically the next Suni)

Then some other gymnasts but they aren't really top challengers at this time:

- Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey, Leanne Wong, Shilese Jones, Ashlee Sullivan, Kayla DiCello, Zoe Miller, Emjae Frazier, Olivia Greaves, Charlotte Booth and a few other elites could be fighting for the other spots...

I’m just saying if things didn’t work out I wonder if she’d return to school

β€œWe're meeting after this year," Graba said Wednesday when asked if he has received any indication of Lee's plan.Β "We've all decided to try to get through college, the NCAA season, and then we do have to have a plan for what's coming up. I know ushe wants to come back. I know she wants to go back to (the International Gymnastics Federation). But I also know that she's still got a lot on her plate and needs to balance it. So we're going to be here."

Update: Suni just tweeted :

She's so humble too.Β  Truly a great Ambassador for Auburn, the sport, and women's sports in general.Β

UCLA HC just resigned. Let’s see what will happen with their recruiting class, 5-star signee Ciena Alipio trained with Suni and Graba for a while. Maybe we can steal her from the Bruins.
UCLA will most likely target the Arkansas coaches now (they are all former UCLA gymnasts and assistant coaches). Arkansas also has a nice incoming recruiting class this year and added some very talented gymnasts this past season…this new development could weaken Arkansas tremendously.Β

I would hate to lose her. I think she is a great recruiter.

Ashley Johnston, Auburn

The newly minted associate head coach at Auburn, Johnston is a highly regarded coach who helped lead the Tigers to their best finish in program history at No. 4. While it seems likely that Auburn will do everything it can to keep its staff intact, Johnston is sure to be a sought-after coach as the carousel gets going.

I've liked how she would interact with the girls on their final coaching moments before their routine.Β

Did you see the Five38 article on gymnastics? Not exactly a ringing endorsement for Graba.

I saw people talking about it on Twitter and had to go look it up.Β

CGN Way Too Early Power Rankings For the 2023 Season

https://collegegymnews.com/2022/04/22/way-too-early-power-rankings-for-the-2023-season/

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

1. Oklahoma

2. Utah

3. Florida

4. LSU

5. Alabama

6. AUBURN

2022 Finish:Β No. 4

Gymnasts Lost:Β Jada Glenn, Derrian Gobourne, Allie Riddle, Drew Watson

Postseason Routines Lost:Β 5

2022 Recruiting Class Rank:Β No. 12

Fresh off a program-record year and finishing in the final four, the Tigers should expect to be in the thick of things once again next season. Even with a few more years of Sunisa Lee, replacing Derrian Gobourne’s star power won’t be easy, but incoming five-star recruit Olivia Greaves looks to be a great option to levy some of the loss. Plus, a Gobourne return still hasn’t been ruled out, which would raise Auburn’s 2023 outlook significantly.

7. Michigan

8. Missouri

9. Michigan State

10. California

11. UCLA

12. Oregon State

13. Arkansas

β€œWe’re meeting on it this week,” Graba told reporters. β€œBut yeah, she plans on coming back. She’s planning on training for 2024. At this point, Auburn has been so good for her. Auburn has supported her in her quest for the Olympics. As long we can continue to provide value, she will compete for Auburn and continue to train for 2024.”

I guess we won’t really know for a while…because Suni really wants to return to Auburn but they have to figure out how to make this work…

This article also has an update on Olivia Greaves.
