Deflection. Typical, predictable, sad.

It's really 4 things:

  • the judgement; or lack of judgment involved; in setting a precedent to trade US detainees for multiple Gitmo AlQaeda bad guys. We have a lot of Americans serving in places that makes them targets for kidnapping...and we have countless businessmen and women doing the same...this action clearly signals we will do these deals and it sets the terms for future deals.
  • this was not done overnight; this negotiation had been ongoing for months...it would have been easy to brief the Chair of the Intel or Defense committees on this...that's all it would have taken for anyone that was really interested in briefing Congress or acting in good faith. This administration has no interest in acting in good faith toward either house of Congress or the Courts or with the American people.
  • The narrative after this has been confused...the facts certainly point to someone who either outright deserted to the other side; or was at best derelict in his duty. Yet, Susan Rice once again is on the spot with this quote "He served the United States with honor and distinction". AND "even if it involves terrorists, we still have a sacred obligation to bring that person back"....honor? distinction? sacred obligation...really? Where does this kind of logic come from? Sacred obligation just chaps my ass. Can she get anything right? Ever? How insulting is this to the 832k other US troops that have served in Afghanistan over the last 10 years....or the tens of millions who since our founding have actually served honorably and with distinction. I think Brick Tamland has a higher IQ than this administration on foreign policy.
  • The ability of any other government to keep the 5 Gitmo detainees from re-entering the battlefield. If the only agreement is a one year ban on travel out of Qatar; what happens then? How can Qatar or any government guarantee they won't re-enter the battlefield if they only have eyes on them for one year? This just defies logic.

I would love to hear from others how they think this is in the US interests? No responses put forth to date are plausible.

We found Jessica Lynch in the maze of sand-colored buildings in Iraq. We raided, killed the bad guys and rescued her. That sent a message. We found Bin Laden in Pakistan. We raided, put several bullets in him and sent yet another message of our awesome power. Given those examples and our intelligence capabilities, it made sense to continue "negotiations" while finding Sgt Bergdahl and planning a raid. The claims of him deserting is another reason Obama shouldn't have rushed. I really do believe Obama is sympathetic towards radical Islam. This was a terrible move by him and he should be held accountable.

It is my opinion, that they were not consulted because the WH knew what the answer would be. Its the same thought behind the thought, its better to ask for forgiveness rather than permission.

ISAF always knew where Bergdhal was. He was merely the political tool by which to release five talabani operatives from club Gitmo.

I'll try that defense with the IRS and see how it goes...

Now Mad Magazine chimes in too. There's a rumor that the trade for Bergdhal was not just for the 5 terrorists, but that several millions dollars ransom was also paid by the US.

General Orders for Sentries: (excerpt from Warrior Culture of the U.S. Marines, copyright 2001 Marion F. Sturkey)

The eleven General Orders for sentries never change. They constitute the unyielding bedrock which enforce military security in the United States and throughout the world. General Orders dictate the conduct of all military members on guard duty.

1. To take charge of this post and all government property in view.

2. To walk my post in a military manner, keeping always on then alert and observing everything that takes place within sight or hearing.

3. To report all violations of orders I am instructed to enforce.

4. To repeat all calls from posts more distant from the guardhouse than my own.

5. To quit my post only when properly relieved.

6. To receive, obey, and pass on the sentry who relieves me, all orders from the commanding officer, officer of the day, and officers and noncommissioned officers of the guard only.

7. To talk to no one except in line of duty.

8. To give the alarm in case of fire or disorder.

9. To call the corporal of the guard in any case not covered by instructions.

10. To salute all officers and all colors and standards not cased.

11. To be especially watchful at night and, during the time for challenging, to challenge all persons on or near my post and to allow no one to pass without proper authority

Indeed. The immature, uneducated, sad commentary is becoming the norm. God bless us all.
