The entire premise of a constitutional republic is to prevent mob rule which, in theory, does exactly that. Protecting the minority has become somewhat perverted to mean protect anything and everything that isn't the norm. I don't necessarily subscribe to that theory in the absence of sound judgement while ignoring thousands of years of societal norms.
