The doctor my wife does some work for is visiting colleges with his daughter who is a senior and they are headed to Auburn. I actually have two questions:

1. Coming from Birmingham, would it be better to take US 280, or just take I-65 to Montgomery then I-85 to Auburn? Does 280 tend to have a lot of bottlenecks and two lane stretches or have they improved it?

2. What are some places they should go in Auburn besides Toomer's Corner, The Lovelace Museum, etc? Especially cool places to eat?

I like 280 because 65 is so dull but it does have some construction going on with two lanes and bottlenecks

i'd say some places to eat not near toomer's are Auburn City Limits, the new italian place on college, buffalo connection, provino's, outback, and longhorn

Everyone has their own opinion. During daytime, low traffic periods I prefer 280 but there isn't a dimes difference. Going Montgomery is further but just about as quick. 280 is fourlane all the way except for about 12 miles.

I'm no authority on places to eat. There are several places between Toomers and the railroad tracks. Other places out Opelika Highway and out College St. towards Monthomery.

Tell me more about these:

Auburn City Limits

the new italian place on college

buffalo connection

The others we already have up here in the Nashville area and I'd like to send him somewhere more uniquely "Auburn". Someone suggested Mama Goldberg's and Guthrie's. What about those?

I forgot about Auburn City Limits. I love it and highly recommend it. It looks like a tin storehouse from the outside but is is very nice inside. It's a little pricey but the food is great. it's a couple of miles outside town on the Lochapoka highway, on the right. Look for the sign.

There is another neat place on SouthGay St. near the old Texaco station (just behind it).Another place if they like bar bq is Countrys. it is out Opelike Highway a couple of miles, on the left.

Mama Goldbergs is OK but just a pizza place. it is popular with students due to it's location on Magnolia Ave. Gutheries is lso popular but primarily a place for wings.

Nah man Auburn City Limits is a high society type place that requires dress clothes and crap. He should hit up Niffer's for dinner out on Opelike Road. Maybe Mama G's for lunch one day. Maybe he could make it to the Olde Auburn Ale House, which is right behind Cheeburger Cheeburger. All those places are very good and reasonable, but since your buddy is a doctor i dont guess that matters. He should definetly try these places though........let me know if his daughter needs an escort because i know a fine southern gentlemen that could show her a good time :D

Some others mentioned:

Hamilton's

Amsterdam's

Tell me about those and this Niffer's joint.

Amsterdam Cafe is just an average place but I like it. Food is good and on a nice day you can sit outside. Food ranges from just hamburgers to regular dinners. It is a popular place with students.

Hamilton's is just off Toomers Corner at 174 E. Magnolia. It's in one of the old historic buildings (Bank of Auburn?). I've never eaten there but it is always crowded which is a good sign.

Momma G's is my favorite place to eat down here... it's a deli with some good sandwiches. It is your classic hole in the wall restaurant, but it's really good. It's definitley not your nice, sit down restaurant but is definitely an Auburn place. Everything else mentioned is good. I'd also reccommend Bizilia's Cafe on College, it's a coffee/sandwich shop. If you want a sit down dinner go to Amsterdam's, but it can be a bit pricey at dinner. And I always prefer to take 280 from the Ham down here.

Niffer's is located on Opelika Hwy, headed towards the mall, on the left. They have great burgers, but it's basically like a Chili's or a Friday's, except that Niffer's is not a chain, owned by Auburn People (I believe they tried to open one in Clemson, but not sure if it's still there). A very Auburn-friendly place. Make sure you have them try the Corn Nuggets.

Buffalo Connection is located on the corner of Wire Road and Shug Jordan (behind the gas station). Selling buffalo wings, they have a good number of TVs, and Auburn pictures on every wall.

Gutheries has the best chicken fingers in the world. I think there are now 2 locations in Auburn (they built one where Tiger Time used to be).

I've had a bad experience at Cheeburger Cheeburger, so I can't recommend that one.

I can't believe no one mentioned Prices BBQ House. Although we just refer to it as THE BBQ House.

Ms. Price is awesome, and her son, now the official owner I believe if a cool guy. Alwyas helpful and they make the best damn chipped pork on the planet.

One of the girls knows my order as soon as I walk in. :D

oops forgot to mention...It's on the corner of College and Samford.

And another plus is it was Carnell and Ronnies favorite place to eat last summer! (i forget where i read that but it was in an article about the two of them)

I would say that the best place to ever eat in the history of Auburn was Mr Gatti's, but I hear it is closed. :(

I haven't been to AU since 2000ish, so a lot of these places are new to me. I'm guessing from the other posts that Mamma G's is still around. That would be a good place to go. Stay away from the draft beer, if they still sell it, it's only worth drinking if you are under the legal drinking age. Plus, my parents said that place always reminded them of their college experience.

Yeah Mr. Gatti's is closed. I believe it is a new sports bar/grille called 1st and 10. I've heard their hot wings are pretty good.

PT, Mama G's is a deli on Magnolia, nothing to do with pizza. Just great sandwiches and cold beer.

And Guthrie's isn't wings, it's chicken fingers with outstanding sauce. And a healthy dose of grease on the side. No wings.

I know they weren't there when you were, but I had to correct this.
