toddc 13,194
Quote Recruiting Insider: Quick hitters from the weekend By Keith Niebuhr 5 hours ago Five-star linebacker Trenton Simpson committed to Auburn in June. (Photo: Jason Caldwell/Inside The Auburn Tigers, 247Sports) AUBURN, ALABAMA -- With Auburn not playing a marquee opponent this week (no offense to Kent State), it wasn't expected to have that great of a visitors list. But as it turns out, some big names and emerging targets were on hand Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Here are some quick recruiting nuggets from a weekend that was busier than expected .. -Five-star linebacker commit Trenton Simpson of Charlotte (N.C.) Mallard Creek was not expected to attend any games at Auburn until late in the season, but because his team played in South Carolina on Friday that got him a little bit closer to Auburn so he made the trip Saturday. We can confirm Simpson, the highest-ranked Tigers commit, stayed overnight. He spent much of his time after the game with Auburn linebacker K.J. Britt. With in-state North Carolina not giving up, it's significant any time Simpson visits. When will he back on campus? Probably in November for the games against Georgia and Alabama. -Guess who was back on campus Saturday? That would be 5-star 2021 defensive end Dylan Brooks of Roanoke (Ala.) Handley. For those keeping score, he also attended last week's Auburn game. Look for him to be back at Jordan-Hare Stadium several more times this season. Brooks hung out with a bunch of commits Saturday and, we are told, has started to really feel at home in Auburn. That was his fifth or sixth known trip there this year. Auburn seems to have really put the foot on the gas in this recruitment ... and everyone from the staff to the current commits have pitched in. Brooks is the No. 1 weak-side end and No. 18 overall recruit nationally in the industry generated 247Sports Composite for 2021. -A new offer went out Saturday to a player we've been writing about for a few weeks. That's Trinity Bell. He's a 6-feet-7, 250-pound tight end target in the 2021 class from Albertville (Ala.). Auburn tight ends coach Larry Porter watched him play Friday and Bell attended Saturday's game at Jordan-Hare Stadium. He's also a prospect in basketball. Physically, he's impressive looking to say the least and he just might end up being Auburn's top tight end target in the junior class. Bell's athleticism wasn't a question. But the Tigers wanted to scout him in person to see how tough he was. It sounds like they got their answer. For what it's worth, Bell also probably could play defensive end. Nebraska, Illinois, and Tennessee all previously offered. He has heard a lot from Auburn since Sept, 1, the day programs could begin contacting juniors. “My mom’s side of the family are big Alabama fans and my dad’s side of the family are big Auburn fans,” Bell recently told 247Sports' Hank South. -Four-star running back commit Tank Bigsby of Hogansville (Ga.) Callaway was among the many commits at the game Saturday. That makes two Auburn home games in a row for Bigsby, who is among the Tigers' most important recruits in the class. We also spotted these commits at the game: 2021 quarterback Aaron McLaughlin, receiver Ze'Vian Capers, center Avery Jernigan and guard Tate Johnson. Bigsby, by the way, was the last recruit we saw leave Jordan-Hare Stadium after Saturday's game. He was inside chatting up running backs coach Cadillac Williams for a good bit. -New 4-star safety commit Ladarius Tennison of Rockledge (Fla.) was supposed to announce at 5 p.m. CT Saturday on Twitter. But like many of you, everyone played the waiting game for a couple hours after that. Turns out Tennison's video already had been posted on Facebook but few noticed. Meanwhile, the people who made his video, also had posted it on Twitter -- but because Tennison never re-Tweeted it not many folks initially saw it. Hey, it happens ... but needless to say everyone at Auburn was thrilled about his choice. -Another 2021 of note who visited Auburn on Saturday is Anquin Barnes. He's a 6-feet-5, 299-pound defensive tackle from Montgomery (Ala.) Lee. The Tigers offered him this summer and he is someone they are closely tracking. When Auburn offered Barnes in June, here's what he told us: “It meant everything” Barnes said. “I’ve been watching them since I was growing up. It meant everything to be in the spot I’m in now.” Physically, Barnes already looks like a college freshman or sophomore. While he could project on either side of the ball, he prefers defense. Each cycle, defensive line is a priority area for the Tigers and the 2021 cycle will be no different. It's possible Barnes will be a major Auburn target. -Former Auburn defensive tackle commit Damarjhe Lewis of Griffin (Ga.) attended his second Auburn home game in as many weeks, but at this time we think the Tigers are being patient here. That is to say, they aren't pushing to get him back on board at the moment. It sounds like they want to keep evaluating him as they also recruit other tackles in the 2020 class. It's clear Lewis' interest in Auburn remains strong and that puts the Tigers in a good spot should they ever decide to pursue him again. But will they? It feels like they may have to miss on some guys for that to happen. But in recruiting, things always are fluid. South Carolina 3-star athlete commit Eric Shaw of Notasulga (Ala.) Reeltown attended Saturday's game, which is interesting since the Gamecocks played host to Alabama on Saturday. Could it have simply been a time or transportation issue that kept him from that game and got him to Auburn? Or are the Tigers making some kind of push? One Auburn commit texted us after the game to ask if Auburn would take Shaw. Right now, we don't yet have an answer to that. We'll keep digging and let you know when we learn more. Zeek 16,650
I know many here don’t care and we have a solid recruiting class right now but I’m bothered by our lack of 5 star talent. Georgia has 3, Alabama 2, Texas A&M 3, and LSU 2. We’re still in the running for 0 this year. Alabama is still in it for 5, Georgia 6, LSU 1, and TAMU 3. All but one of our OL commits are 3* and before I get the “stars don’t mean everything” it’s just discouraging seeing the teams we’ll see every year out performing us. We’re doing well I just think (looking at our peers) we could do a little better. War Eagle.
mcgufcm 4,096
I’m not a stars don’t mean anything guy, but on this one, I don’t really care. For me, the only 5-star guy that hurt to lose was Myles Murphy. We were so close there. He would’ve been a perfect fit and seems like a great kid. That hurt. Outside of that, I’d rather have Tank than any RB in the class. It’s total guesswork trying to split hairs between him and Zach Evans or other top guys. We’re landing the guys we’re targeting. On the OL, we needed Juco guys more than HS stars. That’s just where we were. We have the top two OT targets in Juco, according to our coaches. That’s as good as you can do when you need immediately contributors. Odd as it seems, that’s better than two five-star prospects, no matter what the Juco guys are ranked. McLoofus 35,182
We've got a very solid OL class but it is kinda crazy that no 5*- any of whom knew he could probably start right away- wanted to come block for another 5* at QB.
mcgufcm 4,096
See I don’t believe in the “could start right away” part. Seems like, for every Jonah Williams there’s a Calvin Ashley or Montez Ivey, who aren’t ready. In our spot, I’d rather have the Juco guys.

For every Calvin Ashley, there's a Jonah Williams. And we just went through a Calvin Ashley. For the record, I'm buying this class. And I'm definitely high on them taking some less highly recruited guys early instead of waiting on big dogs that never walked our way. And the jucos are clutch. And I'm actually about to pivot hard. I just looked it up and there are only 2 5* OLs in this cycle, both tackles. One went to Ohio State and the other went to uga. I don't think any sane argument can be made that we "should" have landed either of those guys. So I'm going to take a big L here.

toddc 13,194
Quote Crystal Ball trends for Auburn targets By Keith Niebuhr Sep 16, 7:25 PM Four-star OLB Phillip Webb is a top Auburn target. (Photo: 247Sports) Auburn recruiting had a big summer and the momentum has continued into September. Since Big Cat Weekend, which was June 1, the Tigers have landed 13 commitments and jumped up 22 spots to No. 7 in the 247Sports recruiting team rankings. The summer/early fall blitz for the Tigers is par for the course in these parts. In fact, just two cycles ago Auburn sat outside the top 50 in the rankings in late June before rallying. The 2020 Auburn class boasts a steller average rating per commit of 91.07 --- that's up from 88.54 on June 1 -- and well above the 90.00 threshold for a 4-star average. The good news for the Tigers? They still have room to land up to six more prospects. Right now, the class ranks as the fourth best in the ultra-competitive Southeastern Conference. Yet, the Tigers still have needs to fill, particularly on the defensive line. With the 247Sports Crystal Ball, media members predict where top recruits will land. Even though it's early in the cycle, today we take a look at what the chatter is about some top Auburn targets. Jeremiah Pegues, TE, Oxford (Miss.): Auburn and Ole Miss are the Crystal Ball leaders here for the 4-star recruit, but Pegues has gone on record to say the Tigers lead -- and by a fairly good margin. Can they finish things off? And when might he announce a decison? There is some chatter, he could be a Tiger sooner rather than later, but these things always are fluid. Pegues has visited Auburn multiple times, most recently in June when he made a surprise trip to the school with some family. That was his fourth known visit to Auburn. Could he be back on campus this month? It's possible. McKinnley Jackson, DT, Lucedale (Miss.) George County: Auburn does not have a single Crystal Ball pick for the country's No. 112 recruit, but intel suggests the Tigers are very much in this race. In fact, we've been told at least one other school recruiting Jackson sees Auburn as potentially the favorite. Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss and Texas A&M probably are the other teams to watch here. Jackson is expected to give Auburn an official and the Tigers would like that to come after the season. He doesn't plan to announce his decision until National Signing Day in February. Phillip Webb, Buck LB, Sugar Hill (Ga.) Lanierr: Clemson is the Crystal Ball favorite for this 4-star buck target, but that program -- at last check -- wasn't the factor it once was because of limited space in its class. At Auburn, the word is Gus Malzahn's Tigers see Alabama and LSU as the top threats. Both of those schools, like Auburn, are all in on Webb, who is one of the top edge rushers in the country. Webb has officially visited both LSU and Oklahoma. He'd like to have a decision sometime in the relatively near future. But he also wants to take some official visits. Two weeks ago, he told us Auburn and Alabama likely would get officials. When? That isn't clear. This one really could go in a number of directions and while Auburn certainly is in it, it's difficult to pinpoint a favorite. Zykeivous Walker, DE, Ellaville (Ga.) Schley County: The Crystal Ball for this 4-star end is all Georgia. And, word is, the Bulldogs are fairly confident here. But Auburn is doing its best to plug away and hopes the play of its defensive line this season will help with this recruitment. More than once, sources have told us the Tigers think Walker is an Auburn type of kid -- relatively quiet and a small-town guy. Defensive line coach Rodney Garner watched Walker play in person last week and the Tigers are trying to get him on campus next week for the Mississippi State. This weekend, he'll be at Georgia. It feels like this will be a big hill to climb, but Auburn is said to be cautiously optimistic. Kendall Dennis, CB, Lakeland (Fla.): The 4-star recruit has just one Crystal Ball pick and it's for Auburn. He once said a summer commitment was likely. Then, sources told us it could happen in early September. Why the delays? We're not sure, but Auburn continues to be a prominent factor in this recruitment and still is the favorite, we think. Dennis told 247Sports he planned to be in Auburn next weekend. That visit would be hugely important in this recruitment. Jay Hardy, DE,Chattanooga (Tenn) McCallie School: Auburn was a little late to the party in this recruitment and that certainly didn't help. Right now, Tennessee is the Crystal Ball favorite and, per sources, seems to be the clear team to beat. But ... we expect Auburn to ramp things up and work hard to get a visit from Hardy in the near future. The issue is, if the Tigers don't get him on campus next weeknd the next home game isn't until Nov. 2. Omari Thomas, DT, Memphis (Tenn.) Briarcrest Christian: Thomas seems to like Auburn a lot, but he has visited the Tigers just once. Now, he says he'll be back on campus for the Auburn-Georgia game in November. Still, it's doesn't feel like the Tigers are a top contender at this time. Most of the chatter is about Ole Miss and Tennessee. Auburn's need at tackle is big, and the push will continue. Brian George, CB, Highland Community College (Kan.): There are no Crystal Ball picks in yet for the country's No. 3 junior college corner and there's a reason for that. His recruitment is all over the map. In late July, it looked like Auburn may lead and that he was close to having a decision. Now, the Tigers aren't sure what he'll do. Some think the Florida schools (he's a native of that state) could be the ones to watch. Now, though, Kentucky will host him on an official visit in October. Two months ago, we liked Auburn's chances. Now, we do not.
Zeek 16,650
Pleased as punch with the LB recruiting in this class. Pegues would be an excellent pickup at the TE/HB position. Not really sold on Garnett but I suppose QB isn't an immediate need right now. Still very excited about Tank and the receivers we've gotten. Happy with the number of OL but skeptical of the quality of some. DL is alarming and I hope it picks up considering how many guys we'll lose there this year including Moore. I am wait and see on the O-line recruits. I agree about D-Line. What seems confusing is Garner has been putting D-Line into NFL and this year it looks like 3-4 more will go possible 1 or 2 in first or second round. With PT and a coach who puts you in the bigs I am surprised at lack of commits so far but hoping for a late surge.
