Packers did not take advantage of Ford's interception haf to settle for a 34-yard field goal from Anders Carlson.

Ford and Carlson are the only two players to provide any excitement for the Packers tonight. Down to the Detroit Lions 27 to 3bat halftime.

By Mark Inabinett | minabinett@al.com

Tampa Bay cornerback Jamel Dean reached a career high with 10 tackles and recovered a fumble, but the Buccaneers dropped an NFC South game 16-13 to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

Dean’s previous NFL best had been nine tackles in a 31-29 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 9, 2021.

Dean recovered a fumble at the Tampa Bay 16-yard line and made a 7-yard return on the next-to-last snap of the first half to keep the game tied at 10-10.

While the Buccaneers turned back Atlanta’s scoring bid in the closing seconds of the first half, Tampa Bay wasn’t as fortunate in the second half.

After the Bucs tied the score on a field goal with 45 seconds to play, Falcons QB Desmond Ridder connected with tight end Kyle Pitts on the 36-yard pass, and Younghoe Koo hit a 51-yard field goal as time ran out.

Rudy Ford ‘piecing it together’ at safety for the Packers

Updated: Oct. 22, 2023, 5:36 a.m.|

By Mark Inabinett | minabinett@al.com

Safety Rudy Ford has played all but five of the Green Bay Packers’ 356 defensive snaps in the 2023 NFL season. He’s been on the field for one special-teams play.

Consider the transformation the former Auburn defensive back has undergone since entering the NFL as a sixth-round draft choice of the Arizona Cardinals in 2017: As a rookie, Ford had no defensive snaps and 169 special-teams plays.

“He’s just doing his job,” Packers safeties coach Ryan Downard said on Monday. “He’s doing it at a high level. He’s playing hard. When you turn that tape on, you see how hard he plays.”

In his first four NFL seasons, Ford was on the field for 125 defensive snaps and 806 special-teams plays.

In 2021, Ford got the opportunity to play some at slot corner for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He got into the games for 423 defensive snaps and 179 special-team plays.

When the Jaguars released Ford at the end of the preseason last year, Green Bay signed him to help on special teams. But the former New Hope High School running back ended up starting six games at safety, too.

In 2023, Ford as been at safety since the start of the season. As the Packers return from their bye with a Saturday afternoon meeting with the Denver Broncos, Ford has intercepted a pass in two straight games and ranks second on the team with 35 total tackles and 24 solo tackles.

“I think Rudy Ford is a great example of why you have an offseason, why you have OTAs, why you have training camp,” Green Bay defensive coordinator Joe Barry said on Monday. “If you remember, we signed Rudy Ford the first week last year. You book those reps, and when you don’t have those, you’re kind of learning literally on the fly. That took Rudy almost the entire season compared to this year where he had an entire offseason. It’s his second year in the system, he gets a nine-week offseason, he gets an entire training camp, and he’s not a young player, but he’s a young player with us, just in his second year, so I think all those things factor in.

“When a guy really puts everything into it and works and grinds and studies and then goes out and makes some plays, you’re happy for him. He’s bounced around in his career, and he’s kind of looked for a landing spot to be able to show what he can do. The thing I respect the most about Rudy is the way he approaches every week and just locks in and works his butt off into the game plan.”

Downard said the extra time on task had benefited Ford.

“He came in so late last year,” Downard said. “He did a good job for us plugging him there. … But now he’s had a chance to really detail out all the jobs, all the assignments. I talk about that up here all the time -- how detailed these jobs are. It’s not just: ‘Hey, go cover that guy.’ There’s eye progressions. There’s thought progressions. There’s coverage mechanisms. There’s checks. He’s got the opportunity to now finally embrace all of that. I think he’s piecing it together.

“He’s very intentional. He’s very detailed. He wants to know the ins and outs of everything.”

Green Bay is Ford’s fourth NFL team. He played 23 games with the Cardinals, 21 with the Philadelphia Eagles and 15 with the Jaguars. He has 22 games with the Packers and has started 11 of the past 13 dating back to last season.

“I’ve just been trying to focus on dominating and consistency,” Ford said. “Those are the two things I’m focused on. I set out goals to achieve, and that’s my approach. Every game, I put my all into it, and whenever they evaluate me and we have those conversations, there shouldn’t be any, ‘Oh, this and that.’ Does he do it or does he not?

“I’m just focused on: How do I get the scheme down better, and how’s my play style helping this team? I always look at areas to improve, whether they say I have a good game or I have a bad game.”

Auburn NFL roundup: Derrick Brown, Panthers post first win

Updated: Oct. 30, 2023, 1:29 a.m.|

By Mark Inabinett | minabinett@al.com

In the Carolina Panthers’ final game before their bye week, defensive tackle Derrick Brown had recorded one tackle after making 29 in the team’s first five games and played a season-low 70 percent of the defensive snaps.

Brown’s status had been listed as questionable because of knee and ankle injuries entering that contest – a 42-21 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Oct. 15 that dropped Carolina to 0-6.

During the break, Brown told ESPN’s Paul Finebaum when asked about his health: “Just battling through. As soon as you start camp, man, you go from 100 percent down, so I’m just trying to stay in the range where I’ll be able to play every Sunday.”

When Carolina returned to the field on Sunday, Brown was in the range and helped the Panthers post their first victory of the season with a 15-13 win over the Houston Texans.

Brown made five tackles and broke up one pass against the Texans.

Brown has swatted eight passes during the 2023 season.

Brown was among the 18 former Auburn players who got on the field on the eighth Sunday of the NFL’s 104th season.

Three other former Auburn players were involved in the Houston-Carolina game:

· Panthers outside linebacker Eku Leota is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Panthers linebacker Chandler Wooten did not record any stats.

· Texans offensive tackle Kilian Zierer is on injured reserve and not eligible to play.

In the other Sunday games:

Dallas Cowboys 43, Los Angeles Rams 20

· Cowboys cornerback Noah Igbinoghene (Hewitt-Trussville) was designated as a game-day inactive.

Minnesota Vikings 24, Green Bay Packers 10

· Packers kicker Anders Carlson made both his attempts – a 30-yard field goal on the final snap of the first half and an extra point.

· Rudy Ford (New Hope) started at safety for the Packers. Ford made six tackles.

· Packers defensive lineman Colby Wooden made one tackle.

New Orleans Saints 38, Indianapolis Colts 27

· Colts offensive tackle Braden Smith was designated as a game-day inactive. Hip and wrist injuries kept Smith sidelined for the third game in a row.

Miami Dolphins 31, New England Patriots 17

· Dolphins defensive tackle Byron Cowart is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Jonathan Jones started at left cornerback for the Patriots. Jones made three tackles and broke up a pass.

New York Jets 13, New York Giants 10 (OT)

· Jets defensive end Carl Lawson was designated as a game-day inactive.

· Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood made two tackles on special teams.

· Darius Slayton started at wide receiver for the Giants. Slayton caught one pass for minus-1 yards. New York started with its backup quarterback, finished with its third-stringer and completed 6-of-14 passes for 7 yards in the game. With 16 yards lost in sacks figured in, the Giants had minus-9 passing yards in the game.

· C.J. Uzomah started at tight end for the Bengals. Uzomah had a 19-yard reception.

Jacksonville Jaguars 20, Pittsburgh Steelers 10

· Montravius Adams started at nose tackle for the Steelers. Adams made four tackles and recorded one tackle for loss.

· Jaguars defensive tackle Angelo Blackson did not record any stats.

· Jaguars safety Daniel Thomas (Lee-Montgomery) did not record any stats.

· Jaguars wide receiver Seth Williams (Paul Bryant) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

Tennessee Titans 28, Atlanta Falcons 23

· Titans defensive tackle Marlon Davidson (Greenville) is on the practice squad and not eligible to play.

· Titans cornerback Roger McCreary (Williamson) was designated as a game-day inactive. A hamstring injury kept McCreary from playing.

· Titans quarterback Malik Willis had two carries for 4 yards. Willis came in on the fourth play of the game, but he couldn’t control an off-target snap and got charged with losing a fumble at the Tennessee 28-yard line. With No. 1 QB Ryan Tannehill sidelined by an injury, Titans coach Mike Vrabel had said Willis, who had served as Tannehill’s backup, and second-round draft pick Will Levis would play against Atlanta. Levis hadn’t played this season, but on Sunday, he completed 19-of-29 passes for 238 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions while Willis did not throw a pass.

New York wide receiver Darius Slayton had his most productive game of the 2023 season on Sunday, even though he didn’t play in the second half, in the Giants’ 31-19 victory over the Washington Commanders.

Slayton had four receptions for 82 yards and one touchdown before leaving late in the second quarter with an arm injury. He went to the locker room and did not return to the game.

Slayton scored on a 40-yard connection with quarterback Tommy DeVito as New York took a 14-3 lead with 5:58 left in the first half. On his first touchdown since a 54-yard reception in a 24-16 victory over the Houston Texans on Nov. 13, 2022, Slayton caught the football at about the Washington 15-yard line and juked his way into the end zone.

Slayton had the second touchdown reception for an Auburn alumnus in the NFL this season, following a 1-yard TD catch by New York Jets tight end C.J. Uzomah in a 23-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Oct. 1.

Working with the Giants’ No. 3 quarterback on Sunday, Slayton had his most productive game since he had six receptions for 90 yards in a 20-20 tie with Washington on Dec. 4, 2022.
