Republicans today are stupid

"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are [a] few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid."

- President Dwight D. Eisenhower, 11/8/54

Only the GOP isn't trying to do any of that. More misapplied, nonsensical testimonial clap trap from 51 yrs ago that has no bearing what so ever on what's happening today. It's funny to watch you Lefties spin so fast. I can't begin to accept that you even believe 1/2 the stuff you're shoveling, but are only trying to get a rise out of the GOP.

Sorry, no sale here. Keep spinning.

Today, Ike would be called a "bed-wetting libbie."

So would the father of the modern Conservative movement, Goldwater, strangely enough. I'd call Ike "mainstream" and Barry a little Right of Center-- today's Center.

"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security,

Man, I totally agree with Eisenhower. Destroying SS is stupid. Letting it die with no action is destroying it in a lot of people's minds. So I guess he is saying that the Dems are stupid. Sorry Ike, we already knew that.

Bush and the repubs have no plan to address the shortfall, only to increase it by diverting funds. Both he and Cheney have finally admitted it. Don't tell me you still don't see that?

Well...its a good thing they are making it mandatory.

Honestly, I think the liberals are mad that we now have a CHOICE. Because they know if they chose to stay in it...and it was the wrong choice...they wont have MY poorly managed money to live off of.

It's not that they are mad that you are taking your money out of the system for YOU...they are mad that you might take your money out of the system...away from them.

This is what I was asking about on another thread. David, and others, say that SS will not be destroyed because Bush's scheme is optional. Yet, the huge reduction in funds to pay benefits NOW will be replaced with.......we don't know. But, but, but, it's optional, so SS won't suffer.

Ding, ding, ding...Pavlov rings his bell and they come running!

BTW, David, do you really think, and this is gonna require you to look beyond your box, do you REALLY think that any plan that the Democrats put on the floor is going to pass? As the minority in both houses of Congress, do you honestly believe that any of it would get passed? Bush has already said that any SS bill that doesn't contain private accounts will get vetoed. So, the "uniter not the divider" has told Congress, especially the Democrats, "When I want your opinion I'll give it to you."

I am being totally honest here, I know the basics of what Bush is proposing. I haven't heard or seen anything from the Democrats. I am not saying this to point a finger, I am saying it because I haven't seen/heard their proposal to save Social Security. That may be my fault for not reading up enough or avoiding the News Channels so could someone help me out here?

I think that is a "most excellent" idea MDM. I read a lot and cant remember reading or hearing what the dems propose either. Tex & Al why don't you give us that information?

Their proposal is "stick with the current crappy plan". Just like welfare. Stick with it.

By you telling me that we cant do this...since its optional...and the people who EXERCISE their option would take money out of the pot that is to be earmarked for others...essentially you are saying, you can NEVER EVER EVER EVER change the plan. Just stick with the one we have.

And I say...its my retirement. Its MY MONEY. Social security in its present form is socialism. You cant say that it isnt. Because the second we try to do something with our own money, you're telling me I cant...because you want to keep MY MONEY.

Nice rant, BG.

Do you think that Bush is trying to destroy SS? I'm not asking for the GOP playbook answer, "In its current form it will run out in ________ if nothing's done." That would be tweaking it. I'm asking you if you think Bush's ultimate goal is to fully destroy SS?

And, Tigermike/MDM, before you start...I don't know what the Democratic plan for SS is but I'm sure when debate hits the floor we'll all see.

Basically you are saying that their plan is: any dang thang as along as it is not what W proposes?

Or is it a big secret plan that will knock the socks off everyone?

I guess we'll see. Bush doesn't seem to be getting much traction for his SS plan, despite going on a 60-city whirlwind tour to sell it.

Here's where the Democrats are proving themselves to be gutless wonders. If they wanted to win elections, they'd do what the Republicans did the last time they were in the minority--and push a sensible alternative to the status quo, push it as hard as they could, make the Republicans vote on it and then crush them for having destroyed a proposal that the people wanted. If they instead just sit around with their fingers up their noses, complaining about how bad the Republicans are, they won't get anywhere.

You want an alternative to Bush's destroy Social Security plan? How about removing the cap on taxable income that allows the richest Americans to not pay social security tax on most of their income. That would keep the whole system solvent WITHOUT lowering benefits or raising taxes on the rest of us.

See, there's where you disagree with the Republican plan. Those politicians and their contributors think it's THEIR MONEY, not yours. Bush's discretionary account, to spend as he pleases.

I understand you can have your tax refund sent directly to your gas station now.
