  1. 1. What should/will happen during NO rebuild?

    • Return to previous old-ill-concieved single family structures?

    • Will become more like conventional city with highrises etc.

I really dont have a clue. If the levees get fixed right this time, I see it as more of a Las Vegas, more gambling and entertainment. Citizens move out of town, into suburbs.

You have to understand. The portion of New Orleans that got flooded was New Orleans East, which was the poor section of the city. The suburbs of Metairie, Westbank, and others are fine. Even downtown New Orleans is fine.

The media has over-blown the city being inhabitable thing.

The city doesn't need to be rebuilt at all. Just New Orleans East, which frankly could turn into the nations worst area and be better then what it once was.

Look for the casinos to buy up property and build a Southern “Las Vegas”.

Also if past history is anything to judge by, look for graft and fraud to increase big time. That is not a knock on New Orleans, but an observation of rebuilding efforts in the wake of past hurricanes. The Federal prisons have had more than a few officials, local, state & federal, as long term boarders.

Jesse Jackson should move into the "city" and be annointed the next Mayor. He could then purchase HIS new home in Dallas and become Mayor there as well. He could then develop a liberal gambling mecca and finance the rebuilding of Watts.

(Not to mention Compton.)

I just hope that no tax dollars are spent to build any building on land that is below sea level. If the money is spent to avoid future "disasters" it will be a good investments. Just rebuilding levees and doing nothing more doesn't make sense.

Good idea. And lets not spend anymore money on Los Angeles since the city is basically on the Earthquake line.

Give me a break. Money should be spent mostly on protecting the city but to say nothing should be built on anything below sea level is a joke. There are tons of important buildings in this city that are below sea-level that have a huge impact on this city and SHOULD be built with tax dollars.

Slink, that is a good comeback. People are going to live on the coast etc.

What some of us object to is that our insurance premiums and tax dollars go to subsidize their standard of living. Saw a John Stossel report one time on ABC 20/20 Newshow with Hugh Downs and Babwah Wahwah. He showed just how middle Americans actually spend millions and millions subsidizing the rich along the coasts.

Confessions of a Beach Welfare Queen.
