Ryan Shoemaker, a three-year starter for Oak Mountain High School, said on Friday that he plans to attend college at Auburn.

The 6-0, 192-pounder, who took official visits to Auburn and Alabama, helped Oak Mountain to the best season in school history with a 10-4 mark as a punter, field goal kicker and kickoff man.

“Both colleges want me to come in as an invited walk-on,” says Shoemaker, who notes that he grew up an Alabama fan, but took an interest in Auburn after attending a football kicking camp at AU.

He also had interest from Vanderbilt, Georgia and UAB, but narrowed his choices to the Tigers and Tide. He took official visits to both colleges.

Oak Mountain reached the Class 6A state semi-finals before losing to Daphne, which finished as the runnerup to Hoover.

Shoemaker says he is glad to get his decision behind him. “When I came back to school on Wednesday, everybody was driving me crazy asking me where I am going,” he says.

As a senior, Shoemaker made 12-18 field goals with the longest a 48-yarder. He hit 38-39 extra points. His coach, Jerry Hood, estimates that 75 percent to 80 percent of Shoemaker’s kickoffs were touchbacks.

“He did a really good job for us as both a kicker and a punter,” Hood says. “He averaged 39.5 yards per punt, but could really boom the punts when he caught them and that would help us a great deal with field position.” As a junior, Shoemaker’s punting average was 42.5.

or maybe he knew that he HAD to be better than the kicker already at AU, and wouldn't miss five FG in a game, so TT guaranteed him playing time...

humh? could that be it? :poke::big:

Or maybe he didn't wanna spend his college career telling his friends "oh ya, well we might have lost to you but X team (who isn't Alabama) beat you".

He picks the team that won against the others on the field.

Auburn's starting punter, Kody Bliss, and starter field goal specialist, John Vaughn, will be be seniors this fall.

As a senior, Shoemaker made 12-18 field goals with the longest a 48-yarder. He hit 38-39 extra points. His coach, Jerry Hood, estimates that 75 percent to 80 percent of Shoemaker’s kickoffs were touchbacks.

A student who is taking advanced level classes in high school, he says he is interested in majoring in pre-med in college and is also interested in physical therapy.

He may end up at UaT sometime in the future anyway.

From a friend of a friend, etc., Shula's approach was tradition, tradition, tradition. Tuberville blew them away talking about Ryan and what he could accomplish at Auburn accademically as well as on the football field, putting the emphasis on Ryan. I'm sure the scholarship offer helped, but from the same person, bummer offered a scholly 15 minutes before Ryan announced. Toooooooo late! Some of the extended bummer family members are not taking this too well, either.

How funny, a bammer player nicknamed "money." I chuckle everytime I here it. Who gives freaking kickers nicknames anyway, I mean c'mon, he's a kicker.

Rumor Machine is soon to crank up in Tuscaloosa.

We HAD to buy the kid. We HAD to, I mean everyone knows that every player everywhere in the US and its possesions live just to wear the Crimson Jersey....The only way he, a staunch Bama fan from what I hear, went to :au: was for the money.

There, I said it for the Bama fans. Now I have to go take a shower....

Want a good laugh? A direct quote from another bama board (one of the better ones):

"Tubs has got to buy up all the good players before anybody else has a chance to recruit them."

Duh.....Shula didn't visit Shoemaker in his home last Wednesday and have the same opportunity as Tubs to offer a scholly?

But is is encouraging to learn that bama won't get any good players :big:
