1972-"Punt, Bama, Punt!!" 17-16....don't know how anyone alive at that time can vote for any other game!

231376

I'm old enough.

I was there.

It was surreal: Bama No. 2 in the Nation. Back to the drawing board, Bryant.

Afterthought on "Punt, Bama, Punt"--

People tend to forget that there were THREE blocked kicks in that game:  Roger Mitchell blocked an extra point.  Otherwise, it probably ends in a tie.

231453

I'm sure the young folks with no memory of the game get tired of us old guys talking about it, but it WAS surreal. I didn't have tickets to the game, being only a freshman, so stayed glued to the radio. I think I was at Toomer's almost before the final horn stopped sounding!

As you say, we tend to overlook the blocked extra point earlier in the game. It didn't seem significant at the time it happened.

The most surreal part to me was that the second blocked punt could almost have been an instant replay of the first. Who'd have thought Bear would leave the same hole in his protection two punts in a row? Who'd have thought the same guy, Bill Newton , would get in and get a hand on both kicks? Who'd have imagined the same guy, David Langner, would grab both loose balls, and manage to get both across the endzone?

I now return this thread to younger, newer stories (fade out..with Springsteen's "Glory Days" in the background. :big: )

Yes you are old. I used to have a square 45 record that had the play by play recorded of the blocked kicks. Wish I could find it.

If you don't find it, would you like me to make you a copy of my old Edison gramophone "wax cylinder" of it? :big:

Here's an obscure one...the Miss. State game in '01. We hadn't beaten them in 4 years, and Damon Duval had a game-winning FG at the end. A senior next to me at J-H said "Now I can graduate a happy man." It was the game of the year for exactly 7 days as another Duval FG brought down Florida the very next week.

94 UF best ending! Best Game!

89 UF Reggie Slack hits Little bitty Shane Wasden in the corner of the endzone wide open to pull victory from the jaws of defeat!

Craig takes Auburn down the field and gets out of Baton Rouge with a 31-28 win over the Bayou Bengals in 1997. Cecil "The Diesel" Collins went wild in that game, and it was a rowdy night in Red Stick.

Auburn-Syracuse cuz we beat me home team that I hate. And Jason Campbell basically made it known that he was the man - not Dan Cobb

That game is one of my favorites too. I think that game kind of gets lost in the shuffle with some the great AU vs. UF games that followed such as ’93, ’94, and ’01. The Gators weren’t ranked #1 and the game lacked the scoring that the other games had. However in my opinion that was one of the best finishes to an Auburn game. No timeouts and facing a 4th and 10. You’ve got to love it!

*Also the pass from Slack to Wasden is one of my favorite all time Jim Fyffe calls.

I was at 72 :ua: , 82 :ua: , and 01 :uf:

I say the crowd made difference in the 01 :uf: It was the sweetest, no doubt. The crowd shook the ground when the fg was good! No one there will forget the game. The recap will be an anomaly for us too. The heroes really werent that good of players or coaches. Cobb was the qb. Moore was one of several rbs by committee. Highly unusual game. After the game, CTT told the Finebaum audience that he knew we were going to win that Wednesday. Florida lost its rb during the week but everyone just knew we we still gonna lose. Coach Lovett, Coach Mazzone (remember them?) called excellent games. Lovett shut Florida's running game completely down. Mazzone called the perfect series on the final drive and left Spurrier with no time on the clock at all. We were so spent after the game that we didnt win a a big game the rest of the year. La Tech took us to overtime the next week. Lost the IB to Bama 31-7. Lovett and Mazzone were fired after the best performance of their careers turned into the worst performance in AU history.

The 72 :ua: was the most memorable. Punt, Bama, Punt.

But by a mile the 82 :ua: game was the most important and re-established us as a power in the :sec: again. You can measure a win many ways, but Dye lived upto the '60 minutes' quote. Broke the 9 year drought. He beat Bear in his last regular season game. He re-established us. We were THE team of the eighties in the SEC.

The goal posts came down.

I lived out in Ridgewood Village at the time. I went to bed that night around 2AM and you could still hear the crowd at Tommer's until about 4AM all the way out in Ridgewood Village!

BTW, the Bammers were sssooo shocked at losing to us they were absolutely speechless after the game. A few 'Luckys' was all we heard.

The next year was the tornado game. We won it too. They were green after that game. Bo had 256 yards that night against Kines' D.

I had that same record. I think it was a gift the AU Alumni Association sent out (My dad - '67 and '73). I used to listen to that thing just about every day.

My favorites would have to be:

'93/'94 - UF

'94 - LSU

I was at all three of those. By far, the '94 UF game is the single best, Non-Alabama, Victory I've even seen in person.

Any victory over Alabama.

 1) 94 and 93 UF games especially the 94 Frank Sanders catch wow.

2) 94 LSU throw an interception game,Brian Robinson,Ken Alvis were some of the best secondary AU has ever had

3)90 FL ST. game for some reason I knew we were going to win that game and kept turning it back to the Braves in the World Series..then I was like "what am I doing" and turned it back to Auburn for good...field goal up and GOOOoood!!!

4)82 Bama I remember my whole house (family galore 16+) jumping up and down after Bo over the top.

5)89 FL wasn't that on Halloween night because I keep rembering getting interupted on that game...the pass.

6) 05 UGA sweet pay back for that pass in 2002.

7) 04 LSU the YEAR we "should have been".

8) 02 overtime against Syracuse give it to Carnell ONE more time.

9) 83 Mich..we may not have scored a touchdown but Ole Al is pretty good too.

10) All right guys help me with this one,was it 97 against South Carolina against Tanny Hill and co... Craig carried the whole of the load in a close one.

:cheer:

'84 @ FSU AU wins 42-41 on late Fullwood score.

'84 @ Sugar Bowl AU beats Michigan on last second Del Greco FG 9-7

'90 @ AU vs FSU late Tiger FG edges Criminoles 20-17

'93 @ AU Tigers edge Gators 38-35

'94 @ UF Nix to Sanders AU wins 36-33

Thats funny you say that about CTT b/c that Tuesday I was on my way to Taco Mac and Welcome to the Jungle came on the radio and at that moment I saw a van pass me with a UF sticker on it. It felt like an omen to me so at dinner I told everyone that we were going to win that game, of course they said I was crazy and giggled about the omen thing. On staurday I saw Tommy(head of tiger walk,RIP) and he told me he felt like we were going to win the game so I told him my story and he totally got it and believed in it. After that game I stormed the field(the only time) with my brother,it was a BLAST and of course I said I told you so to everyone.

Guys, that 10-9 win over UT in '71 was unbelievable! That game was nationally televised, because I remember being in Massapequa, Long Island, and watching it.

I think I've recounted it before on here...but what was so AUsome was that were were trailing 9-3...went all the way down the field on the NEXT TO LAST drive of the game...and then FUMBLED into the UT end zone, and they recovered. We held, they punted...and on the last drive of the game, Sullivan took us in, and we won 10-9! UNBELIEVABLE!
