And then, of course, there's White

Friday, August 18, 2006

Don't forget Patrick White. That's what you said. Again and again and again and again.

Don't write about college quarterbacks with Alabama ties - even if the premise is SEC quarterbacks with Alabama ties - without at least mentioning the starter at West Virginia.

Good point. White's from Daphne, and you could argue - as some of you did - that the redshirt sophomore has been the most successful of the current crop of college quarterbacks with state ties.

Unlike Auburn's Brandon Cox and Alabama's John Parker Wilson and LSU's JaMarcus Russell and Mississippi State's Michael Henig and Vanderbilt's Chris Nickson, White has led his team to a conference championship and a victory in a BCS bowl game.

He did it last year as a freshman. He did it by setting the Big East records for rushing yards by a quarterback in a single game (220) and a single season (952).

He did it by playing part-time until the other quarterback got hurt, taking over in a remarkable comeback against Louisville and capping an 11-1 season with a Sugar Bowl win over Georgia in the Georgia Dome.

White could've played in the SEC himself. He could've played at Alabama or Auburn, LSU or Tennessee. If he wanted to play wide receiver.

Not long before signing day 2004, White committed to LSU, which promised him a shot at quarterback, but he didn't know how realistic that shot would be with Russell already there.

The day White committed to LSU, he and then-Daphne High coach Steve Savarese called West Virginia assistant Rick Trickett to break the news. Savarese, now at McGill-Toolen, still remembers Trickett's response.

"Sav, it ain't over. I'll be there tonight."

Trickett jetted to Mobile and visited the White home that night. There was no question West Virginia wanted White to play quarterback in head coach Rich Rodriguez's spread offense.

Trickett, the former Auburn assistant who's developed a recruiting pipeline between Mobile and Morgantown, got his man.

"Patrick has a lot of intangibles it takes to be successful," Savarese said. "He has great character. Great work habits. And he has that great athletic ability. He just had to get in the right system to demonstrate his talents."

Trickett called Savarese the other night with some news about his star pupil. After missing practice time last week with a strained muscle in his side, White returned with a bang. He threw for more than 200 yards and ran for more than 100 in a Wednesday scrimmage.

Trickett told Savarese it might've been White's "best day ever." Scary thought, given his performance as a freshman.

White brings back memories of former West Virginia quarterback Major Harris. As a sophomore in 1988, Harris led the Mountaineers to an undefeated regular season and a Fiesta Bowl date with Notre Dame for the national championship.

Hmmm. White's a sophomore, and West Virginia has the talent and the schedule to be a legit title contender. Where is the BCS championship game? At the home of the Fiesta Bowl.

Coincidence? Or is history about to repeat itself again?

If White gets there, no one will forget that he started here.
