Miami Herald Canceling Lone Conservative

Full Story

After a year, a column written by Paul Crespo, a former Marine officer, Cuban American – and the Miami Herald's only conservative columnist – has been canceled, allegedly for "budget reasons."

We learned that recently Crespo was told by the Herald that his twice-monthly column will no longer appear in the paper despite what he called "an amazing show of support from so many in the South Florida community."

"During my year at The Herald (including three months as a member of the Editorial Board), I have endeavored to use my varied international experiences and education to provide insightful opinions and analysis on a variety of national and international topics," Crespo wrote, adding that he believed he had articulated "the views of patriotic fellow Americans, people of faith and freedom-fighting fellow Cuban Americans who have not had a regular voice in South Florida's major news daily."

Noting that his columns have been cited as "provocative," a "breath of fresh air" and a "reasonable right wing view," no doubt he has provided much-needed balance and perspective to the Herald's left-leaning editorial pages.

Crespo's articles also have been gaining increasing national and international exposure from being distributed throughout the U.S., Latin America and elsewhere.

Crespo will meet with the Herald's publisher Alberto Ibarguen, in the coming days. We hope the paper has second thoughts.

Well, if he had only one year on the job and the paper needed to cut a head in his department, wouldn't he be the one most businesses would get rid of, regardless of political leaning? Do you have an insight into the paper's budget showing that they DON'T have a budget problem?

w.r.t.? Sorry, I'm computer illiterate on that one?

The Real military? Bush was given an assignment into the Air national Guard in Texas on the same day he applied, even though they stopped accepting new recruits long before he applied. Poitical grease? Anyway, nothing new there as that's been accepted practice for mant political children for many years after the draft's implementation. Many, such as Dick Cheney, Dick Armey, Dennis Hassert and co. simply used medical reasons for excusing themselves from the military. Where Bush messed up was requesting a transfer to Alabama National Guard and never showing up. His mistake was the paper trail showing his desertion.

'with respect to...'

so if bush had joined the 'regular army' and gone to combat, you'd be in his corner,eh?

Probably not but I'd respect his military authority more than I do now. I would still disagree with his policies. BTW, it's not that I disrespect his not going to battle, it's his not being able to even honor the militry route that he chose that bothers me and should bother everyone. How can a military deserter demand respect from the military who are in his charge?

My question is, even if they do have a budget problem, why would the editorial page get rid of it's only conservative voice if they truly want to be "balanced"?

I honestly can't say? Can you? Are they union represented? If so, this could be the one with least seniority. Do they truly have a budget problem? I don't know. I wasn't the one making the assumption that he was fired for being a conservative voice. Did they know he was a conservative before they hired him? If so, why would they hire him simply to turn around and fire him after a year on the job? Were there longer serving members of the staff that deserved to be let go in place of him? I don't know the answers and don't pretend to know the answers. However, I don't see a political hot potato here. They claimed a budget shortfall and made a cut of an employee with only a year on the job.

Kind of like the paper trail exposing Clinton's bravery in leading the charge to the English front. What unit did he fight with, the socialist brigade?

You are so full of crap your eyes have to be brown.

not sure, db, but i think the proof should be in the pudding in this case.

while there are certainly some military personnel & their families that hate the fact that bush has them over in iraq, i haven't really seen anyone bashing him because he's a "military deserter".

it may bother the anti-bush group more than it bothers the military who are in his charge....

but then again, it appears that anything this president does bothers the anti-bush groups...regardless of whether their view is shared by the ones who actually have a right to be bothered.

Probably not but I'd respect his military authority more than I do now.

What is important is that the people in the military "respect his military authority" and the large majority DO!

Read "Dissent in the Bunker." Many, if not most, disagree with Bush's policies in Iraq. Unfortunately the AG has warned the military that speaking out could be considered treasonous. In one example I posted over the weekend, one soldier is already facing military discipline for questioning the new policy of having soldiers sign waivers releasing them for their earned R&R so that they can be sent back into Iraq before getting their one year off from active duty after serving a year in battle.

A few top military and a few "true" conservatives are also now questioning Bush's leadership in Iraq.

I have nothing intelligent to add??!! Dude, check out your inane posts. The BS you post here is either so off the wall no one responds to it or, if they do counter it with facts, you post 10 other BS topics from very questionable sources. Heck, even your cute little signature gives credence to what I'm saying. You deal in far left wing extremist propaganda and only 2 others in here (besides yourself) are buying it.

BTW, I never called you a "doo-doo head". I was just alluding to the fact that 95% of your post are nothing but crap.

Fair enough, but for the record, let me say there is a huge difference in one being told he's full of **** (which I implied) rather than being called a **** head.

Concerning Bush's missing time in the military and how the present-day servicemembers view it; I was talking to the wife of a Marine a few weeks ago about this and I asked her if this bothered her or her husband. She basically said "No." She said she knew about his dropping out for a year to help "Red" Blount's campaign but wasn't really concerned that he was missing during that time. They're just happy to have a Republican in there. It's a case of selective outrage.

It's not that we in the military are happy to have a Republican for a President. I, for one, am happy that we have a Commander in Chief that is honorable.

BTW, President Bush actually wore a uniform.........Clinton skipped the country. Honor versus dishonor.

But, that's what I'm saying...Bush's AWOL year doesn't seem to matter. That doesn't seem to cast any dishonor on his 'service' or his presidency or him personally.

Also, I wouldn't characterize Clinton as 'skipping the country,' as this sounds like he went to Canada to dodge the draft. He was, if you remember, a Rhodes scholar in Oxford University.
