Breaking Down Mens Scoring Output

Figured since I put in the effort in the game thread, I could make it into it's on topic. I love stats/numbers so it was interesting to look at.

 

So, I took the time to crunch the numbers and it's amazing just how different they are.

At the 15 Minute mark:
Georgia Southern: 8 Points out of 83. 75 points the other 35 minutes.
Davidson: 12 points out of 76. 64 points the other 35 minutes.
South Alabama: 5 points out of 70. 65 points the other 35 minutes.
CSUN: 22 points out of 116. 94 points the other 35 minutes.
Colgate: 15 points out of 91. 76 points the other 35 minutes.
New Mexico: 9 points out of 84. 75 points the other 35 minutes.
Richmond: 9 points out of 79. 70 points the other 35 minutes.
Furman: 6 points out of 81. 75 points the other 35 minutes.
St. Louis: 2 points out of 67 .62 points the other 35 minutes.
NC State: 8 points out of 79. 71 points the other 35 minutes.
Lehigh: 6 points out of 74. 68 points the other 35 minutes.
Lipscomb: 9 points out of 86.  77 points the other 35 minutes.
Miss State: 6 points out of 80. 72 points the other 35 minutes.
Vandy: 6 points out of 83. 77 points the other 35 minutes.
Georgia: 5 points out of 82. 77 points the other 35 minutes.

We've scored 113 points total in the first 5 minutes or on average 7.53 points per game. That breaks down to 1.51 points per minute.
We've scored 1,098 points total in the remaining 35 minutes or on average 73.2 Per game. That breaks down to 2.09 points per minute.

If you take away our 100+ point game which is an anomaly:
We've scored 91 total points in the first 5 minutes or on average 6.07 Per Game. That breaks down to 1.21 Per Minute
We've scored 1,004 total points in the remaining 35 minutes or on average 71.71 Per Game. That breaks down to 2.05 Per Minute.

Now I went further and started since the Furman game because I feel like that is when our offensive troubles really started:
We've scored 48 total points in the first 5 minutes or on average 6 per game. That breaks down to 1.2 Per Minute.
We've scored 579 total points in the remaining 35 minutes or on average 72.38 Per game. That breaks down to 2.07 Per Minute.

At the 10 minute mark:
Georgia Southern: 19 Points out of 83. 64 points the other 30 minutes.
Davidson: 21 Points out of 76. 55 points the other 30 minutes.
South Alabama: 13 Points out of 70. 57 points the other 30 minutes.
CSUN: 36 Points out of 116. 80 points the other 30 minutes.
Colgate: 24 Points out of 91. 67 points the other 30 minutes.
New Mexico: 17 Points out of 84. 67 points the other 30 minutes.
Richmond: 19 Points out of 79. 60 points the other 30 minutes.
Furman: 17 Points out of 81. 64 points the other 30 minutes.

We've scored 958 total points in the remaining 30 minutes or on average 63.87 per game. That breaks down to 2.13 per minute.

Once again, taking away the CSUN game:
We've scored 233 total points in the first 10 minutes or on average 16.64 Per game. That breaks down to 1.66 Per minute.
We've scored 878 total points in the remaining 30 minutes or on average 62.71 per game. That breaks down 2.09 Per Minute

Since Furman Game:
We've scored 120 total points in the first 10 minutes or on average 15 Per Game. That breaks down to 1.5 Per Minute
We've scored 508 total points in the remaining 30 minutes or on average 63.5 Per Game. That breaks down to 2.11 Per Minute

 

So, if you take our best per minute average which is 2.13 points per minute and multiply it by 40 that would put our scoring offense at 85.2 points per game which would put is in a tie for 2nd in all of college basketball.

1. A comparison of this scoring distribution to the average scoring distribution of the top 5 scoring teams in college basketball. I'd be curious to see if the top scoring teams are doing so in a more evenly distributed way.
2. Similar to our scoring offense distribution, how does our scoring defense shape up? Do we get off to a shaky start on defense typically as well?

I'll probably do more things like this. Maybe once a week or something. Was planning on doing the defense next. I don't think we start off that slow, though.

With the rain, I wasn't able to work all day today so I got home and figured I would do this real quick. I went a little further and broke it down into a couple of different things. Number of players averaging at least 3 points per game since that's where our 9 rotation stops at. How many times and how many different players led the team in scoring for game. How many players had a game where they scored at least 10 points. And then how many players scored at least 10 points in the same game. This was an interesting thing to look at but doesn't take into account SOS. I did, remove any stats that were played against non-D1 schools. The NET doesn't care about those games and neither do I. Also, this was only done with the top 5 offensive teams and Auburn is currently #10th in PPG.

Auburn: 10th in the nation at 82.1 PPG with a 14th SOS.

*Samir Doughty - 15.7 PPG - Led the team in scoring 7 times.
*Isaac Okoro - 13.2 PPG - Led the team in scoring 4 times.
*J'von McCormick - 11.6 PPG - Led the team in scoring 3 times.
*Austin Wiley - 10.7 PPG
*Danjel Purifoy - 9.6 PPG - Led the team in scoring 1 time.
*Anfernee McLemore - 7.7 PPG
*Jamal Johnson - 5.1 PPG
*Allen Flanigan - 3.5 PPG
*Devan Cambridge - 3.3 PPG

All 9 of our main rotation have scored 10 points at least once in a game. Basically all of our starters are averaging double-digits and we can get our scoring from anywhere on the court on any given night.

Georgia Southern -  4 players over 10 points.
Davidson - 5 players over 10 points.
South Alabama - 4 players over 10 points.
CSUN - 6 Players over 10 points.
Colgate - 5 players over 10 points
New Mexico - 4 players over 10 points.
Richmond - 3 players over 10 points.

NC State - 3 players over 10 points.
Lehigh - 2 players over 10 points.

On average 3.93 players score over 10 points in each game.

Gonzaga:  1st in scoring at 87.8 PPG with a 292 SOS

*Filip Petrusev - 16.6 PPG - Led the team in scoring 6 times.
*Corey Kispert - 14.1 PPG  - Led the team in scoring 6 times.
*Killian Tillie - 12.2 PPG - Led the team in scoring 3 times.
*Joel Ayayi - 10.9 PPG
*Ryan Woolridge - 10.5 PPG - Led the team in scoring 1 time and tied 1 time.

*Admon Gilder - 10.4 PPG - Tied the team in scoring 1 time.
*Drew Timme - 9.2 PPG
*Anton Watson - 4.9 PPG

Gonzaga has 6 players averaging double-digits with another 1 that's close. Also, all of their main rotation guys has scored 10 points at least one time. Doesn't surprise me considering their the #1 scoring team in the nation with one of the worst SOS.

Alabama State: 5 players over 10 points.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff - 6 players over 10 points.
North Dakota - 6 Players over 10 points.
Texas A&M - 4 players over 10 points.
UT Arlington - 3 players over 10 points.
CSU Bakersfield - 4 players over 10 points.
Southern Miss - 4 players over 10 points.
Oregon - 3 players over 10 points.
Michigan - 1 player 10 points
Texas Southern - 7 players over 10 points
Washington - 5 players over 10 points.
Arizona - 4 players over 10 points.
North Carolina - 5 players over 10 points.
Eastern Washington - 5 players over 10 points
Detroit - 4 players over 10 points.
Portland - 5 players over 10 points.
Pepperdine - 5 players over 10 points.
San Diego - 4 players over 10 points.

On average 4.78 players score over 10 points in each game. However, they're the only team on the list that had a game where only 1 player scored double-digits.

Central Michigan: Tied for #2 in the nation at 84.4 PPG with a 150 SOS.

*Kevin McKay - 15.9 PPG - Led the team in scoring 5 times and tied 1 time.
*David DiLeo - 13.5 PPG - Led the team in scoring 3 times and tied 1 time.
*Dallas Morgan - 11.69 PPG - Led the team in scoring 2 times.
*Rob Montgomery - 10.9 PPG - Led the team in scoring 1 time.
*Devontae Lane - 9.5 PPG - Led the team in scoring 1 time.
*Travon Broadway Jr. - 7.6 PPG
*Deschon Winston - 6.4 PPG
*Corey Redman - 1.6 PPG

Central Michigan is the first team where not every player in their rotation scored at least 10 points in a game, however they did have a player who averages less than 3 points, score 10 at least once. Also, this was the first team where I had to re-average their stats since they played 3 non-D1 schools. A little closer to Auburn when it comes to point spread but they play a way worse schedule.

Sam Houston State - 4 players over 10 points.
Minnesota - 2 players over 10 points.
DePaul - 3 players over 10 points.
Youngstown St. - 4 players over 10 points.
UT Martin - 4 players over 10 points.
Valparaiso - 2 players over 10 points.
Texas - 4 players over 10 points.
Robert Morris - 4 players over 10 points.
Purdue - 3 players over 10 points.
Miami (OH) - 6 players over 10 points.
Northern Illinois - 3 players over 10 points.
Kent State - 5 players over 10 points.

On average 3.85 players score over 10 points in each game.

Eastern Washington - Tied for #2 in scoring at 84.4 PPG with a 185 SOS.

*Jacob Davison - 17.3 PPG - Led the team in scoring 6 times and tied 1 time.
*Kim Aiken Jr. - 15.9 PPG - Led the team in scoring 5 times and tied 1 time.
*Mason Peatling - 12.6 PPG - Led the team in scoring 1 time.

*Tyler Kidd - 6.5 PPG

*Ellis Magnuson - 6.1 PPG

Another team where I had to re-average stats due to Non-D1. The big change being Mason Peatling who scored 54 against a D2 school. Dropped him from 15.6 to 12.6 PPG. Surprising that this team is tied for 2 in the nation in scoring with only 3 players averaging over 7 points per game.

Seattle - 4 players over 10 points.
Saint Louis - 3 Players over 10 points.
Boston College - 2 players over 10 points.
High Point - 4 players over 10 points.
Belmont - 6 players over 10 points.
Washington - 3 players over 10 points.
North Dakota - 5 players over 10 points.
Omaha - 4 players over 10 points.
Gonzaga - 3 players over 10 points.
Weber State - 3 players over 10 points.
Idaho State - 4 players over 10 points.
Portland State - 3 players over 10 points.
Montana - 2 players over 10 points.

On average 3.54 players score over 10 points in each game.

 

Duke: #4 in scoring at 83.8 PPG with a 5 SOS.

*Vernon Carey Jr. - 17.4 PPG - Led the team in scoring 5 times.
*Tre Jones - 14.9 PPG - Led the team in scoring 5 times.
*Cassius Stanley - 11.5 PPG - Led the team in scoring 2 times.
*Matthew Hurt - 11.2 PPG - Led the team in scoring 3 times.
*Wendell Moore Jr. - 7.4 PPG
*Joey Baker - 6.5 PPG - Led the team in scoring 1 time.
*Alex O'Connell - 5.6 PPG
*Javin DeLaurier - 4.3 PPG

Another team where the entire rotation scored double-digits at least once. Also, Duke is the team that is closest to Auburn in terms of points per game and a difficult schedule. About the same when it comes to number of players scoring in the double-digits but their bench is deeper than ours.

Colorado State - 5 players over 10 points.
Central Arkansas - 6 players over 10 points.
Georgia State - 2 players over 10 points.
California - 3 players over 10 points.
Georgetown - 4 players over 10 points.
Stephen F. Austin - 4 players over 10 points.
Winthrop - 3 players over 10 points.
Michigan State - 5 players over 10 points.
Virginia Tech - 4 Players over 10 points.
Wofford - 3 players over 10 points.
Brown - 3 players over 10 points.
Boston - 2 players over 10 points.
Miami - 3 players over 10 points.
Georgia Tech - 4 players over 10 points.
Wake Forest - 5 players over 10 points.

On average 3.75 players score over 10 points in each game.

Dayton: #5 in nation at 83.4 PPG with a 71 SOS.

*Obi Toppin: 19.3 PPG - Led the team in scoring 8 times.
*Jalen Crutcher - 12.8 PPG - Led the team in scoring 2 times and tied 1 time.
*Ibi Watson - 11.4 PPG - Led the team in scoring 2 times.
*Ryan Mikesell - 10.9 PPG - Led the team in scoring 2 times.
*Trey Landers - 10.8 PPG - Tied the team in scoring 1 time.
*Rodney Chatman - 9.0 PPG
*Chase Johnson - 5.1 PPG - Led the team in scoring 1 time.
Jody Tshimanga - 3.3 PPG

Dayton is the one team where if you can stop one player, you have a chance to win the game. Easier said then done, of coure but Toppin led all times with being top scorer 8 times. Another team where their entire rotation did not score at least 10 points once and they have the least-deep bench of any of the 6 I looked at.

Indiana State - 4 players over 10 points.
Charleston Southern - 5 players over 10 points.
Omaha - 5 players over 10 points.
Georgia - 2 players over 10 points.
Virginia Tech - 4 players over 10 points.
Kansas - 4 players over 10 points.
Houston Baptist - 5 players over 10 points.
Saint Mary's - 4 players over 10 points.
Drake - 4 players over 10 points.
North Texas - 3 players over 10 points.
Colorado - 3 players over 10 points.
Grambling - 2 players over 10 points.
North Florida - 3 players over 10 points.
La Salle - 5 players over 10 points.
Saint Joseph's - 5 players over 10 points.
UMass - 6 players over 10 points.

On average 4 players score over 10 points in each game.

 

Not really sure what to make of all of the stats other then this: Auburn has the second toughest schedule, we're tied for 3 with number of players averaging over 10, we're 3rd with average number of players scoring over 10 a game, and we are 2nd in number of players who have scored at least 10 points in a single game this year. Despite our early shooting trouble we're one of the top teams in the country on offense and one of the only teams that can have someone else step up and lead this team if our top scorer isn't hitting his shots.
